Watching it, sounds fair. The bowl ban is a bit short IMO, but the rest of the sanctions have teeth.

The NCAA hit Ped State from every direction with these fines/sanctions. They just absolutely crippled their football program. De-commitments have already begun from potential players and there will be quite a few current players transfer without penalty. Loss of scholarships will go hand in hand with the post season ban. Basically the ones that stay will play. Wont be much talent coming through the door for the next 3-4 years to replace the players that stick with Ped State.
I see this crippling the program for at least the next 7-8 years.

80 total schollies lost over 4 years

For example, the limit is 25 new scholarships per year to a total of 85 scholarships. If the limits are waived in 2012-13 to accommodate one Penn State student-athlete who wishes to transfer to a particular school already at the limits, in 2013-14 the school will be limited to 24 new scholarships and 84 total scholarships

I think they punished the football program too much and the university as a whole not enough. having worked for a university, its the culture and attitude of the administration that causes these problems. should the football program have been punished to a degree, yes. but without punishing the big whigs who run the school and make the decisions, their attitudes will not have changed. i think they focused too much on the football program. the administration is probably so full of themselves that they think they dodged a bullet here.
maybe i am just underestimating the snowball effect this will have on the school.

Since the NCAA is an athletic organization they can't penalize the university. The federal government will take care of that part.

The problem with your assessment is the NCAA is the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Their power is limited to sports programs. They have absolutely no authority over the actual University. The closest they can get to punishing the University is with fines.

After considering how much thought went into this punishment, it seems and feels "right". I thought this was a fair punishment. But I can't help finding myself asking "60 million"??? Where does that money go? To the NCAA?? Too bad that money can't go to the victims or be used to start a NACAA funded counseling program for young abused kids or something. This program is crippled for a while, I do feel its fair to give current and incoming players the ability to transfer without penalty. Should be interesting to see how that plays out as well. Just a sad week in general with the colorado thing and this news.

Anyone else feel it is wrong that both coaches had wins vacated late in their careers as both were just trying to outlast the other. Did they forsake their morals for the purposes of a record(s) or pride?

Paterno had forsaken his morals before he was even close to the record, if this all started in 98
