Just because it's part of their job description doesn't mean they can't be exceptional at it.
For example...?

For example...

a server who brings you a drink before you empty it.
a server who keeps you aware of why your food might be taking too long instead of hiding from you.
a server who is visually busy, but has the time to LISTEN to what you need rather than just running by.
a server who can simply multi-task exceptionally.
a server who is constantly in view of you so they are available to you.
a server who takes responsibility for mistakes rather than blaming the bartender or the cooks.

There's probably a ton of other little things that make them exceptional. If you honestly can't tell an exceptional server from the average joe servers then you must get shitty service.

Seriously - what about this is not expected from every server when hired? Nothing about that is above and beyond their job description deserving a tip from me.

Jesus dude...the way the system is set up, the TIP pays for that portion of there job. That's the system.

And shit like that isn't expected. It's what restaurants want because that is what great service is. So no, those details are not in the job description.

This is a pet peeve of mine. I don't even want them to take responsibility for it but don't give me a story about who screwed up. Shit happens. I don't care whose fault it is I ordered a hamburger with no mustard and it has mustard. I just want another hamburger that doesn't have mustard.

Had a guy last night who was a story teller. You're exactly right, shit happens. Just apologize and get it fixed.

Were you a server once? It seems like people who were servers always get bent out of shape over this stuff. Your job is to serve me food and refill my drinks.

lol tip isn't required so one has nothing to do with the other. If i didn't want to pay 20 bucks for a steak i wouldn't go out.

attitudes like this are the reasons there are even discussions on tipping. obviously you expect a tip instead of earning your tip.

The restaurants don't because the customer can pay more than the restaurant can. And the customer isn't required to do so.

Yes I was and a damn good one.
It always seems that people who were never service people don't understand the process. Goes both ways.

And the job is more than serving food and refilling drinks. Again, you wouldn't understand if you've never worked the job.

If, at the end of the meal, I didn't really notice you, I'll tip 20%. Not because I think the job deserves a tip, but because the restaurants have essentially adjusted server pay to account for them. Had they not done so, I'd be paying more anyway, so to me, a tip is more like "what I should be paying for a no-tip evening."

If I notice a waiter or waitress for a positive reason, it goes up from 20%. If I notice a waiter or waitress for negative reasons, it goes down from 20%.

Also, if 20% is less than $3, I bump it up to $3 usually. I just feel cheap splitting hairs below $3.

And you'd be right. I'm making this statement based on the value my customers thought my service was worth.

Whether I was or wasn't, the understanding of how the system works is correct.

Do you tip everyone who does a service for you that you don't do yourself? Mechanic, dry cleaner, hair dresser, barista, car wash guys, fast food employees etc etc etc - do you give all of them 15-20% of your pre tax bill?

Tell me why someone who serves me food deserves a tip over everyone else who provides me a service. Seriously, don't like not getting a tip, get a better job.

It's been explained before but i'll say it again:

The restaurant business set up their pay scale to allow the customer to decide the value of the service they received. This allows the CUSTOMER to decide if a server is better than minimum wage. If they aren't, the restaurant covers the minimum by law.

Other industries don't use this system.

You tip because of a broken system and call people who don't douchebags and horrible humans. It's not my fault you took a min wage job and expect tips.

If I appreciate the service, sure. Barbers, concierges, taxi drivers, cleaning lady, lawn mowers, pizza delivery guy, bartender, etc.

It's not required, but I do. In my experience, tipping well tends to get you recognized as someone people want to do a good job for. I value a good job being done, so I be sure to add an incentive for such a job.
