10% or less if service is poor. Usually around 15%. More if I know the server.....which is rare. Everyone should realize that you don't have to tip anything. The owners need to pay their employees more to start with. They rely on the patrons to tip their workers. Why should I pay for the restaurant owner's employees? I've never understood that concept.

As i said, i tip out of necessity. Bars i frequent and the woman who cuts my hair I tip the most. I don't like waiting for drinks, especially weak ones, and I don't like getting bad haircuts. I tip 20% to waiters at places i frequent and if it's a nice restaurant I'll tip the maitre d' for a decent table. Otherwise I'll leave a dollar or two.

I think it's dumb that our society deems tips necessary, but I'm not stupid, I understand that tipping gets you treated better and I'm not a martyr.

Also - i appreciate when I order something and the waiter tells me it's really not a good dish and that I'd be happier with something else. That takes balls and for that I leave a tip. Fuck you waiters who tell me everything is delicious.

Tipping helps everyone. Restaurant, Server and Patron.

It is untaxed profit. Restaurant doesnt have to pay their employees for serving, just what they do around the restaurant. Its allowed to be under minimum wage because they are on a tip based job. Restaurant then is saving money and can charge us less.

Helps the server because, well, they dont claim their tips (yeah...they all break the law lol). You should tip enough to cover their work no matter how bad it is. You should tip well if they exceed what you believe a server should do. For me, if my drink is never empty, and you are engaging without holding a conversation, your gonna get close to 30%.

Helps us because we tip as opposed to having the food be a bit more expensive and paying a higher tax on it, etc. If restaurants had to pay their employees more and thus probably pay more benefit wise, the food would go up a decent amount.

Cost of a meal out would be same if this happens. $40 bucks for 2 w/o tip and higher meal prices or $40 for 2 after tip and lower prices.

Right. But the untraceable money, which is essentially ok'd by the government, makes this better for the restaurant and server without changing the cost for the patron. Thats why I like tipping and think it is better.

I'll tip 15 to 20% if the service has been good. If I can tell that the server has an "I expect a good tip simply because I'm your server" attitude he or she gets 10%. If they cop an attitude and I know for a fact I won't be returning to that restaurant, they might get 5% or whatever loose change I have in my pocket including the lint.

Tipping is a stupid custom that has gotten out of control in the United States. At one time 10% was customary. Now it's climbed to 20 or even 25%. In Europe 10% is still considered a generous tip.

Personally I'd rather have the service cost rolled into the meal price. For example, if the meal is $20 charge me $23 and be done with it. No more thinking, "Hmmmm.....the service was average but the food was good so I think I'll do 15% this time so that would be - hmmmm - um the bill is $32.17 so that means the tip is almost $4 and something....so I guess I'll just make it an even $5."

Friggin stupid.

You have two choices, tip, or wait for the whole industry to change and change servers/bartenders to non-tipping wages. So the waitress is now getting paid $5-6 more per hour, guess who is going to pay for that? You are as your meals will go up in price.

So, you either tip, or pay for the added server wages in the food, either way you are paying for it as a customer.

On topic I tip 20%+ for good service, 15% for average service, 10% for bad, and nothing for absolutely terrible service.

I know plenty of terrible American servers who think they deserve an automatic 15% and probably more. They don't get it from me though. If your service sucks and you cop and attitude with me your tip melts away.

When I'm eating by myself, I tend to tip about $3-$4 regardless of the price of the meal. If it's something in the $14-$15 range, I tend to just leave $20 as a total. If it's take out, I usually tip the change (but then I tend to leave the change for the charity jars, etc anyways.

Sometimes I'd tip the price of the meal when I'm by myself. $5 (this was back in the late 90s), I'd just pay with a $10 and leave the change. The more expensive the restaurant (namely seafood), the cheaper I am at tipping by percentage.

Not just Europe, in Asia service (where typically there are no tips) is practically non-existent. You're waiting an hour for the second drink order, if it is even taken at all. The waitstaff has no clue about the menu/wine list.

This is an instance where the U.S. got it right. We tip for good service and in turn expect good service. The rest of the world you don't pay for the staff and in turn you get an incompetent staff.
