Plate races do depend on your partner, but maybe 3 times in NASCAR history tops has a team owner conspired to make his other drivers hold people off so someone could win. Obviously Dale at Daytona, but shit, he owned both cars in front and if he wasn't going to win he was going to make sure they did. Honestly other than that there isn't a single other instance where teammates were used as blockers so someone could win in NASCAR that I know of. That statement is laughable. In Formula One I know there have been team orders on where guys are running, so it's true for them.

As for the 'Are drivers athletes?' Question that always gets brought up, people will decide one way and their minds will never change. I don't care if people think they're athletes or not, even when I was a big race fan I still didn't care. To drive in today's Sprint Cup Series though, it takes extreme physical endurance and insane hand eye coordination. There isn't a person on here who could jump in a Cup car and go 500 miles at near the speeds they do, and not just because of the skill. Every study they've done on NASCAR drivers over the past 10 years or so shows that their endurance levels are on par with marathon runners and long distance bike riders. And that's just NASCAR, you will never ever find a formula one driver that is not in absolute top physical condition. Their bodies take a pounding over a race, and no, not like getting tackled by an NFL linebacker, just physically exhausted.
Regardless, the people who say "they only drive a car" to say it isn't a sport are ridiculous. That's like saying football players just throw a ball or catch a ball, or basketball players just throw a ball through a hoop. It's the same as any regular sport, people can do it at it's basic level, but it takes extreme skill and conditioning to do it at the highest level.
I know all this sounds like I would say drivers are athletes, but I don't know if I would. I do think they have to be in great physical shape and need great reactionary skills, but it doesn't really matter if people say they are athletes or not to me.

I think the Intimidator did an honorable thing by trying to help his teammate win thats what a sport is all about, What do lineman do on a footbal field? They block for the QB and RB duh! So if Scottie Pippen took the game wining shot compared to Micheal Jordan would you quit watching NBA (they also set picks in basketball). You must not watch too much Nascar anymore anyway because yeah you see a few teammates running together here and there but not that often. I dont the Hendricks, Stewart Hass or Roush teams all finishing in a line after each race, just saying. Qualifying and race stategy determine how each team or driver compete in a race.Sykotyk;1216076 wrote:Funny a racing fan saying other sports are fixed. Hell, I liked NASCAR, but Earnhardt died because he wasn't trying to win, but was trying to block so one of the two cars he owned could win. Both were in front of him. And I was a fan of his. That's the day that racing was soured for me. It wasn't 43 cars racing against eachother. It was insider politics and backroom deals that led to a lot of the positioning of a race.

I know plenty of race car drivers that run marathons, ironman, are black belts, etc. Some are more athletic than others, just like a running back is considered to be in better shape than a 313 lb lineman. Refrigerator Perry ran for a couple TDs, does that mean he was a top athlete? Baseball pitchers just throw a ball. Most of them can't even hit one. They must not be athletes.

There ARE drivers that are athletes. They're the ones you mentioned doing other things. But simply being a driver does not make you any type of athlete. A square is a rectangle but a rectangle is not always a square.

Thats what I said. Some are more athletic than others. I know Kyle Busch, Biffle, and more that are straight up wimps out of the car. Sometimes I wonder how they last through a hot race.GOONx19;1216200 wrote:There ARE drivers that are athletes. They're the ones you mentioned doing other things. Jesus, this debate again? Auto racing is a sport, but does not require to be athletic. Cheerleading is not a sport, but requires athletic ability. A sport is a measurable contest that involves physical (not inclusively athletic) skill. Darts is a sport, but anyone with fingers can participate.
