It was already outside. It was on the side of the house, as per the first post. I still would have caught it and given it to the local university.
I don't really understand why he would kill it. There are only a few reasons to kill something(at least with insects): A) you feel threatened that it may cause damage to you and your loved ones or B) the pest is causing severe stress on your every day life.

A bug outside, especially something as harmless as a beetle, should be left alone.

His first response to the question "what is it" was that it was a wood-borer beetle. Those are typically destructive.

This was outside my office last week. It's an Asian Rhino Beetle.

So, none of the above. I mean to each his own, but you won't find me killing beetles or pitbulls any time soon.
