There are too many examples of education level, socioeconomic status, and parenting being factors that determine behavior like this at a far more consistent level. Pick a black kid growing up in suburbia with two parents working middle-class jobs and pushing their son to do well in school. Pit him against a white kid the same age ... even going to the same school if you want ... who has one parent working a lower-class job (government assistance a possibility) and who rarely has time to be home to push his/her son to excel in school and be responsible.

Which one buys the shoes?
