Since FFT asked here you go. Rules are in the red link above but none should be a surprise, you've all read them before.

For obvious violations (telling someone to go fuck themselves, posting porn, etc) just hand out the warning/infraction immediately.

For something minor just drop in on the thread and post something to the effect of cut it out (see some of the posts I've made recently like the one in pitman's $30 thread). If they continue hand out warnings/infractions appropriately.

If you come across a thread that has spiraled out of control quickly you can split the thread and move the crap to the basement. Just select the posts to split off and use the "Move Posts" option. Just select the basement and give it a title appropriate for whatever happened. If you feel the violators need warnings/infractions you can hand them out or just post a warning in the original thread saying not to derail it again.

When you post your warnings don't be a dick about it, just be direct and to the point. In fact, don't be a dick in general. If we're dicks everyone else is going to continue to be a dick.

Also, we have to really watch ourselves and make sure we don't violate any of the rules. If we're fucking around there is absolutely no way anyone else is ever going to take this seriously. I'm going to do a two strike policy for mods. The first is a warning. The second is dismissal. I like all of you guys but we've gotta hold ourselves to a little higher of a standard.

I've also offered up two new mod positions to Laley and gorocks. I decided to skip the voting and just offer to the two guys I thought would take it serious and do a good job. They will start poking their head in today once I set them up with permissions.

sleeper brought up a good point in the "Lurker" thread.

To me moderators should be leading and enhancing discussion, not just infracting people who they think are assholes. I know when I moderated a much larger forum, I was told by administration to add content and induce a healthy debate on every thread. I think the current moderators are terrible in that they never produce content and mostly never post. Why being a forum leader if you just read and occasionally infract?

Not that I think you guys are terrible, but I do think there needs to be more effort in driving content and participation. Going forward, the main duty of moderators facilitate content (creating threads, adding to discussion, etc). I'm not sure if I'm going to set a "minimum" for threads created per week, posts per week, etc, but I will be monitoring overall activity. It seems like creating one or two new threads a week in Srs Bsns and one or two threads per week in the rest of the forums (not each forum) would be a good starting point.

This isn't to say that you can't threadban anymore. I think that falls into the whole "facilitate content" thing.

I'll take a bit to get used to how things are done from this side so I won't be too infraction happy off the bat I don't think. I'll figure it out though. Glad to be on board.

Would you recommend that we not be assholes in the basement too? I ask because though there are no rules there, the sentiment will spill out into the main forums with other posters.

When you say "fucking around", would you prefer mods avoid being overly sarcastic, or specifically what are you driving at there? There are a lot of ways to fuck around.

I think you can still joke around in the basement as long as it isn't too over the top. Like, don't tell someone to kill themselves. But you can call them out for bullshit or make fun of them for being an idiot. Just use common sense.

Before you post something that might be questionable (outside the basement) think what the reaction is going to be from everyone else. If you know they're going to cry foul just don't post it.

When we hand out an infraction, if it's, e.g., a personal attack, should we delete the post by physically removing it? Or edit it to remove the personal attack with some note in it, like was suggested on another thread?

I've just been editing and not changing the post, just adding rules warning or rules infraction to the reason for edit. So people can see that people are getting infractions/warnings and what they are getting them for. I don't mind unapproving a post that's going to derail a thread before it has a chance, i.e. what you did in the Sandusky thread.

I deleted the other infraction levels so you idiots can't screw up anymore.

My bad for not doing that in the beginning.
