Jones can't realistically do better than Kelly. Doing better would mean winning 11 games and the Big East every year, that is technically possible but if that is the standard he is judged by he will be gone in 4 years. I think Jones is a great hire and will be able to match what Kelly has done in time, I don't expect that out of the gate, no UC fan does.

It is my understanding that Cincinnati was probably going to be better than they were this year if Brian Kelly elected to stay. They were extremely young on defense and they were about to gain one of the best receivers in the country (the transfer from Southern Cal). I could easily see Butch Jones maintaining Cincinnati's level of success as they move into next year. The question is, where can Cincinnati go from here? They are, although Bearcat supporters don't want to hear it, essentially a mid-major. The Big East hasn't garnered any respect since Miami and Virginia Tech moved to the ACC. Can Butch Jones get them into the National Championship Game? Doubtful.
On paper UC will be better than they were coming into this year. The defense this year was really young starting two freshmen and two true sophomores with 5 seniors in the defensive two deep. The offense will be explosive once again, Collaros has proven himself to a large extent at QB, and there are 8 returning starters on offense with Kelce, Griffin, Hoffman up front, Guiduli at TE, Armon Binns, and DJ Woods at WR and Isiah Pead at RB and the aforementioned Vidal Hazelton. I would disagree on the quality of the Big East. The conference has proven itself year after year in the out of conference and in the bowl season. Since Miami, VaTech and Boston College decamped for the ACC the Big East has clearly been the better conference.
