I have a friend (cue the, "lol yeah, that friend is actually you!" comments) who is taking this girl to dinner on their first date. He probably knows this girl for about an hour at most. He decided to go to an expensive restaurant, and is planning on using a coupon. I found this to be very tacky for a first date, and advised him not to. Personally it would take the 3rd date a the earliest for me to do something like that, depending on how comfortable I am with her.

What is everyone's thoughts on this? Would you use a coupon on a first date or not (we already know ETB would, in fact I wouldn't be surprised if he ordered himself a three course meal, and only allowed his date to eat an appetizer)? Would you even take a girl to a very expensive restaurant on a first date?

I wouldnt do it,

But if the woman had the coupon and suggested to use it I think I would fall in love on the spot....an actual woman looking to save money instead of wanting to continue to blow it

A) No, I would not take a girl to a very expensive restaurant on the first date for multiple reasons. Besides which you'll be kicking yourself if there's no second date - and the real kick to the nuts is if they order dessert.

B) Never use a coupon, at least on the first few dates. She's not going to see it as practical, she's going to see it as you taking her somewhere you can't afford in a lame effort to impress her.

But I've heard the sly way to do it is to take the waiter aside and tell him you are using a coupon. Or if you're good at slight-of-hand, stick the coupon in with the cash/credit card.

On second thought, you should encourage him to use the coupon, for the lulz.

I don't even take girls to expensive meals on the first date. It's a waste of money; take them to a bar instead and spend $50 on drinks, the results are better even if she's not as attractive or cool as you once thought.

Do it.

It's not like she has to see the coupon. It's easy to pay with it without the other person seeing it.

Seems risky, but I did tell him if he was going to do it, he should hide it.

He didn't listen to me, and told me he has this coupon to a nice place lol. The fact that you would hide it though, tells me you wouldn't do it.

If he does use it - he should say he has to use the bathroom and then give it to the waiter when he gets up.

Expensive joint on the first date? Hell no. Do something casual.

I have no problem with the coupon, just don't let her know.

Yeah, I mean what's he do when she doesn't put out and he has no coupon for the 2nd date? That's when he starts thinking to himself that a hooker would have been cheaper

If it's a big concern, hide it.

I would have no problem using a coupon on the first date. It's really not a big deal to me. I think saving money and being thrifty is a good thing -- and I hope my "significant other" would feel the same way.

I don't believe that calling me a girl aligns with the new rules. I find that offensive, and will follow this post up with a report of your post.

Using a coupon on a first date is a bad idea.

Making her pay is a good idea.

I agree with the crowd here. I wouldn't use a coupon and I also wouldn't take her to a fancy restaurant. A first date should be relaxed where you are actually doing stuff and getting to know each other. Not feeling awkward in an awkward setting. Unless you and her are children of the rich.
