The hardest tracks were a pain in the ass and pissed me off so much that I've not gone back to play the game at all after finally beating the last few tracks....I forget what the 'fault' limit is, but on some of the final tracks I would have a couple hundred faults, all one one stupid jump.
Gigatrack was one that I disliked, it was too long and just not fun, and yes, the spaced out checkpoints was annoying.
I loved the game and will probably go back to it someday, but I got sidetracked with Max Payne and I've just started playing Torchlight.
I took about 2 weeks off because the site I do reviews for sent me the Game of Thrones game. Which I traded in on Saturday to cut the costs of buying the Fallout 3 Game of Year edition and Red Dead Redemption (I usually buy big-name games after the price goes down a lot; Dragon Age Origins and Skyrim are the only two exceptions since I got a 360). Last night was the first I'd played it in a while. Spent a lot of time on fan-made tracks and then finished two on the next-to-last series (humorously, they both had their toughest...for me...move at the very end right before the finish -- with one, I only had like 10 faults entering it and finished with 60) and tried the last one on the last series. That was painful...
I'm not great at the game, but have top 100 scores on a couple of popular skill games. And no-faulted the easiest tournament! And on some lesser-tier fan track, I somehow EASILY have the best time of 10-20 or so. I say "somehow" because I was trying it last night and couldn't come closer than .8 seconds to that time. And it's only a 17-18 second course, too, so .8 is a lot of time.
It does get old-school-piss-you-off hard at the end. I get annoyed when course memorization starts getting just as important (if not moreso) than actual skill. But there are still a good 40 or so game tracks that are fun, along with a lot of great fan-made ones. And a lot of interesting-to-actual-fun skill games to eat up time, so I'm not complaining.
