... I read this morning that Mexican authorities found 18 dismembered bodies (some so bad they couldn't tell which sex they were) courtesy of the Zeta cartel & earlier in the wk. 9 bodies were found hanging from a bridge overpass in Nuevo Laredo.

I've only been to Mexico once. It was weird taking a shuttle from the airport to our resort and seeing all of the military vehicles and soldiers parked along the main roads.

We went to Cancun in 2004. The only time we were really out of the "tourist" areas was when we went to Chitzen Itza. Some of the back roads we took looked kind of rough, but I never saw military (maybe it wasn't as bad 8 years ago). It was disgusting, littered with trash, etc....but I never really felt unsafe. We did come across what I'm assuming was a fatal accident though. There was a white van that had gone off in a ditch...blood all over it. A guy was leaning up against it all bloodied and there was someone hunched over in the passenger's seat. I was amazed because we didn't stop nor did the bus driver call anyone. He slowed down, then just drove right past. That was kind of shitty and I feel bad about it to this day.

Mexico is scary. Occasionally, my brother has to travel to to Nogales for his job and it terrifies me.

I went to punta mita a couple years ago and we went off the tourist areas a couple times and it looked like a hellhole. We went to one of their big box grocery stores down there and it was crazy trying to find things and how different it is. We also visited a lil town that was filled with American surfing hippies and the poor locals. Within seconds of being there a local tried to sell me a bowl when I refused he tried to sell me a bowl and weed. I refused again and he went to cocaine then pills then heroin all within like 1 minute.

The bodies hanging from the bridge was from months ago (unless its new ones). Say what you will about Mexico, but at least the Mexican papers ran the photos of the bodies hanging from the bridge. The Laredo papers only ran the stories (although the Nuevo Laredo papers are sold in the U.S.). I was in Laredo at the time that went down. Pretty crazy. The border was closed for a few days due to the warfare going on down there. ..

see i disagree. they dont fuck around, neither does the mexican army supporting them. you think they will just walk away from a billion dollar business? they will just take this violence north of the border to intimidate us.

That would be like a chihuahua barking at a sleeping bear.

And I doubt they would try and intimidate anything

My company had a shipping facility in Nuevo Laredo. The drug cartel become so bad that our company decided to close it recently as it was no longer safe to operate out of. There were stories about workers being caught in crossfires while to and from work. The company decided that they didn't want to be reliable for any potential incidents, so they decided it was in it's best interest to shut the facility down.
