From the link previously. I'm not saying wikipedia is the end all of everything. But it's a generally accepted source as far as dumb on-line discussions go.

[h=3]Extraordinary powers, skills, equipment[/h]Superhero powers vary widely. Superhuman strength, the ability to fly, enhanced senses, and the projection of energy bolts are common. Some superheroes rely upon special weapons or technology, such as Iron Man's powered armor suit and Green Lantern’s power ring. Many characters supplement their natural powers with a special weapon or device (e.g., Wonder Woman's lasso and bracelets,Green Arrow's trick arrows, Spider-Man's webbing, Wolverine's adamantium claws, Daredevil's billy club, or Thor's hammer).

Even further, Merriam-Webster defines superhero as:

a fictional hero having extraordinary or superhuman powers;also : an exceptionally skillful or successful person

I would say Batman does have extraordinary powers, or in the alternative he is quite skillful or successful.

It's been generally accepted for a while that plenty of "superheros" are without actual powers like superman, but do a lot with their intelligence/assets/fighting ability to fight crime.

The disagreement only comes from a strict interpretation that the majority has clearly declined to adopt. I think the fact that the genre itself adopts a character such as Batman as a superhero is good enough for everyone else.

No super powers, therefore he is not a SUPER hero. He is a hero though.

That's different. Practically anybody could find batman's belt and become a "super hero" while how many others gain super powers from the sun?

Get what I'm sayin'?

Anyone finding batman's belt and becoming a superhero? Surely you jest. Batman is an incredibly intelligent guy with extraordinary fighting powers as well. A whole other planet full of people had superman's abilities... they were all just killed. If anything Batman is more unique than superman barring a world destroying disaster.

When the genre itself accepts them as superheros, it's kind of hard to argue with you know... people who create it. Generally the people who argue that they aren't superheros are just trying to get a rise out of people, or they really don't know enough about the genre to comment on it intelligently.

It'd be like a musical idiot trying to tell a professional musician that his song isn't a rock song, even though he himself and the industry as a whole accept it as rock music.

I bet if Belly35 found that utility belt, he'd do an even better job than Bruce Wayne. The sun does not make Belly a super hero either.

The yellow sun is more unique.

No Batman is not a superhero. He is just a rich guy that can afford a bunch of technology that helps him fight crime in his spare time. Bill Gates could be Batman if he wanted to. If Bruce Wayne was middle class, he wouldn't be able to be Batman.

Batman has no super powers.

So, the yellow sun is more unique. Superman is acceptable as a super hero. Batman is not.

Batman has a genius level strategic mind as well as world class fighting abilities. The comic world generally accepts that if Batman gets a few days to study his opponent, he will ALWAYS win.

He is without a doubt, a superhero.

More like super vigiliante.

And Batman has all those billions. It's really not fair to down-on-your-luck vigilantes that have no upward mobility. It only seems right that the tax man should redistribute his belt to the have-nots. And don't get me started on Batman's carbon footprint.

Batman truly is the anti-liberal. Goes around cracking skulls of guys just trying to make a buck. As a rich white male, he obviously receives special treatment from the police. He pays his butler such a shitty salary the poor sap has to ride a bike.

Isn't every superhero a vigilante? I think the only one that ever really fights with or connected to a government body is Captain America with the armed forces.

I don't know much about them or the Avengers in the context of did they just form themselves and claim to be "good," or were they organized or ratified by a governing body?
