Bullshit. He turned religion into a money maker and laughed all the way to the bank. Guys like him create more problems than they solve.

I lost all respect for this clown when he said God was going to kill him unless his followers donated 8 million dollars to his church. Then there was his son using university money to buy expensive personal items.

Negative cynicism and naivete abound on this thread.

Roberts was a televangelist which garners about as much respect from me as a US senator. He may have had good intentions but the means don't justify the end.

I feel sorry for Mrs Roberts, now that she has lost Oral.

The guy was a fucking douche bag.

He is / was a politician , who hid beyond the (his) church for protection from the law.

I remember my Granny used to watch him sometimes. She liked the choir and some of the singers he would have on his show.

I will post one of the respectful posts. May he rest in peace and may God comfort his family during this time, and I hope the college keeps going and does well. I really dont know much about him, but Ive seen his son on tv. And Ive seen a couple clips of O. Roberts from way back when. Id almost bet you guys probably have a wrong view on the guy because he was a preacher, and probably have no clue about anything about him.. No shock there.

No, they have that view of him because they know the type of views he espoused in his preaching.

May he rest in peace, but i'm not going to go so far as to say i think he did "many good things."

The whole "prosperity gospel" is BS, and he's just one of many televangelists who have used it to their advantage. They enrich themselves through it, nothing more, nothing less. The whole idea that God will reward his followers with material riches is disturbing, and un-Christian, IMO. Such a BS American way of looking at it. I'm sure the Christians throughout the world suffering of hunger and poverty would disagree with that sentiment. The fact that he claimed that they would be rewarded ON THIS EARTH with material success is ridiculous.

He DID spread the word of God to a huge market of people, and in turn probably saved millions (lives...not $$). So he wasn't all that bad. I don't agree with the way he went about things, and how he went out of his way to turn his "discipleship" into a million dollar industry...but to say he is rotting in hell is a little sinister, IMO. He used some of that money to start a Christian university in Oral Roberts...so again, he did some good things.

Anyway, I am glad that if he was a genuine disciple of God (which I believe he was at least early in his career), that he is in a better place now.

"Sinister"

Ahhh, now there is a word I can appreciate. I don't think it's used enough, though. I might have to start finding ways to incorporate that word in more of my everyday life and posts.

I'm a big fan of the word "sinister", too. Mainly because I'm left-handed and one of the lesser definitions of the word is "situated on the left side". And Sinister is a pretty decent European death metal band. I'm listening to their song "Art of the Damned" ( right now thanks to this thread!

LMFAO..so now just being a preacher gives you a bad name? Ummm...no. How about suckering millions of dollars out of people in the name of 'god'. People aren't negative towards him just b/c he's a 'preacher'.

And you'd be dead wrong. Sorry, not buying the "whole world's got it in for Christianity" thing you love to spout. There are MANY preachers/ministers/priests/rabbis whatever that I respect. This douchebag is not one of them. Not only was his "God is going to take me home" threat a con to get 8 million dollars, others in his family were bilking the students of his university. When ORU was $50 million in debt, there were luxury cars bought, trips to the Caribbean (one trip cost nearly $30,000), etc all billed to the University.

If you respect him only because he was a so-called "preacher", then you are a bad judge of character.
