I wasn't going to get a tablet because I wasn't a fan of the price, but Samsung just came out with the Galaxy 2 7" 8GB for $250. Anyone have a tablet/thoughts?

Yes I have a Toshiba Thrive 10" and I love it. One of the biggest pluses for me is you can hook up an external hard drive to it to transfer or watch movies, etc. That's a huge need for me especially on deployment it worked well. Some quirkiness with stock browser but others are downloadable. I like it because I'll sit in bed and surf and read. Sometimes reply on here but it can be a PITA to type.

I have a Samsung Galaxy and the New Gen IPad. Spend the money, get the IPad. It blows the Galaxy out of the water.

I have an iPad 2, and I'll be honest... I don't get the craze about tablets. I have a 17" laptop, a smart phone... why the hell do I need a tablet? I just don't get the craze.

Now... if I didn't have a computer, then OK.

This is where I'm at now. I certainly see uses for it for some people, but I'm not one of them. Someone who travels a lot could benefit from one.

I had one but found that I only used it on the can. Even then, I'd be just as happy with my phone.

My pickle is that I got it free from work. It was our tech director's old one. He got the new Gen, so gave me his old one. I feel like I should be using it for my job, but can't find any uses for it, where I couldn't just use my computer or iPhone instead. My daughter loves it, and uses it for AR tests and other things.

Does the new Samsung Tab have 4g/LTE?

My dad has the first edition. He got a nice deal because Verizon suckered him in to a year long data contract, which I wouldn't recommend unless it has 4g. Just go wifi only.

At first I thought tablets weren't really for me, but I find myself messing with it when I'm home. It's still not as smooth as an iPad, but for the price it's not bad.

From my understanding you should wait 1-2 years on tablets. Right now they are more like phones than computers, as they run apps to try to simulate what computers can do. But in 1-2 years they will be more like computers (able to run a lot of the same programs) than phones.

lol wtf is the point of that?

Buy what you want when you want it, then decide how to deal with the upgrades when time comes.

The problem with this is, if you wait for "better" technology, you'll be waiting forever. There is always something better on the horizon.

Yes, technology will always be getting better. But there is a big difference between a tablet that is more like a smart phone and a tablet that is more like a computer.

Heaven forbid I share something that might be useful on a message board, ETB.

Apps on phones and tablets (not talking gaming apps, but work related apps) try to mimic what computer programs such as Microsoft Office do. They don't mesh all that great when trying to go from one medium to the other. However, soon (I heard anywhere from 6 months to a year) there will be the ability for the tablets to run actual operating systems of computers and their relevant programs. It'll be a lot more expensive at first but prices will come down.

I'm not an expert in technological matters, this is just what I've read and heard. Just trying to offer some helpful advice.

What "doesn't mesh"? You can produce documents on tablets and they work flawlessly between them and computer from my experience. Now Excel is another story, but honestly who would want to run Excel or any other "work related" programs on a tablet when laptops are available.

I don't know what you mean. There are already Windows tablets and Windows 8 will be out soon that has a tablet friendly interface. So technically you can do that now.

But I don't know that people want full blown PC capability. They want something lighter and faster that has some of the major tools. Which is exactly what you described a tablet as. That's not to say the hardware for tablets won't evolve to the capability of current desktop machines.
