The state house just passed a bill (senate had already done so) allowing for sales of alcohol to the general public and suites at TCF Bank Stadium, requiring "the sale or service of intoxicating liquor in a public portion consisting of at least one-third of the general seating of a stadium" or "at a location in the stadium that is convenient to the general public attending an intercollegiate football game at the stadium," or not at all.

All signs point to some sort of age-restricted beer garden in the stadium, but it will be interesting to see what comes out of it and if other schools follow suit. Estimating between $1.5m and $2m in additional revenue per year, I would imagine at a school that actually has fans that number would be higher :)

Is there an NCAA rule on this? I always thought if the stadium was on campus they couldn't serve alcohol or something like that. I am too lazy to google anything right now.

The NCAA has no rules on serving alcohol. West Virginia serves it to their entire stadium

I think it would be good for Illinois, Purdue, Indiana, Northwestern Minnesota. I think Nebraska, MSU, PSU, UM, OSU, Wiscy,Iowa fans all get plenty of lubrication before the game.

I don't necessarily have a problem with it, after all it's a legal product and the risk may not outweigh the reward to a lot of people - I do have a problem legislating where the University can and can't serve alcohol in their stadium (i.e., in the suites only).

You do run into a myriad of issues with students accessing the "convenient" area though. What happens when someone gets too blasted and ends up in the hospital as a result? 'Cause you know it'll happen.

I think it's regulated by the conferences. No alcohol sales at any SEC sporting events, I believe.

Ohio State already sells alcohol in the club level of basketball games at The Schott. If WVU can serve alcohol at games and not see riots ensue, I'm pretty sure OSU would be fine with it. It's not like people don't already bring flasks into the stadium, nor would everyone immediately be jumping at the chance to purchase a $9.00 beer.

I agree with everyone who thinks beer at the shoe is a terrible idea. I've been to a bowl game that sold alcohol and people were obnoxious as fuck.

Alcohol is also not allowed in the general seats at Tiger Stadium, but if you sit right above those areas, in the box seats, you can drink alcohol. "It's easier to control," said LSU Associate Vice Chancellor Herb Vincent. "It's a game management issue." Vincent says because none of the other schools in the Southeastern Conference allow alcohol in general seating, LSU does not feel pressured to change their policy. "It's kind of an unsaid decision that's been made among the league schools that we're not going to sell alcohol," Vincent said.
Vincent says if SEC schools start to sell it though, LSU may reconsider. There is no SEC or NCAA policy in place banning alcohol sales at college sports. It's left up to each individual campus to decide.

Most of the kids playing are under 21, so I think that should be acknowledged in the decision not to serve alcohol at the stadium. What's next - the OHSAA serving alcohol at the state championships?

Tough argument to make considering bowl games typically sell alcohol. It's not like the ages change once the season is over...

Bad idea for any stadium that sells out and gets fans.

Great idea for other schools. Attending Indiana, I can tell you the tailgates were huge. The game would start, and the tailgates were still huge. No one was leaving the booze for bad football. If you sell booze with the bad football, you can double your attendance, if not more.

I understand it's a tough argument. But the point I was trying to make was: If it's slowly becoming the norm to sell alcohol at college football games where there are players under 21 participating in the game, then it is clear that the age of the participants has no bearing on whether or not to serve alcohol. Then the question arises: How long until alcohol is being sold at high school games?

People already sneak lcohol into games, the only difference would be now the school could make some money. UC sells alcohol at games and there have been no serious problems. WVU just started selling last year. USF sells, Louisville sells. If OSU fans can't handle their alcohol like adults, that's their problem

Exactly. At the very least I'm surprised Ohio State doesn't sell alcohol in their suites/club seats.
