Wisconsin looks terrible in this, you don't take on Russel Wilson whom without you don't get a BCS game and allow this kid from Maryland? to come in and then dick around a guy who wants to go elsewhere...bad PR all the way around. Couple that with Brett whining all off season and they look like a bunch of cheese eatin' asshats.

The NCAA needs to say that you can't block a kid from going where ever he wants even in the same conference. The 1 year wait to be eligible, I'm good with that but now even if your not blocked by the school that you're leaving, to transfer within the same conference is a 2 year wait unless you pay your own way. Bad rule, should be the same as an out of conference transfer.

Multi-millionaire 50 year old coaches: free to move whenever, wherever, and as often as they want.

Exactly!

Heard comparisons to the real world with competition clauses, while mentioning AT&T and Verizon or local tv jobs, but that doesn't compare because these are Student's first(or so they say), think a psychology student at Wisconsin would be banned from transferring to Penn State? No. Shouldn't be like that for athletes either.

They're student-athletes until they risk doing harm to the program, then they're employees.

Not that I am supporting Ryan, but this isn't an uncommon practice. The guy is taking shit for something that many, many coaches do.

http://www.cnnsi.com/2012/writers/seth_davis/04/20/bo-ryan-transfer/index.html?sct=cb_t11_a0

When Michigan sophomore forward Evan Smotrycz said last month that he wanted to transfer, his coach, John Beilein, refused to release him to any school that appears on Michigan's schedule during the next two years -- a restriction that was considerably more extensive than the one Wisconsin ended up placing on Uthoff. Tulsa recently fired its coach, Doug Wojcik, and replaced him with Danny Manning, but the school's athletic director is refusing to release 6-4 sophomore guard Jordan Clarkson to five of the eight schools he requested permission to talk to. (None of those five are in Conference USA.) The University of South Carolina fired Darrin Horn and replaced him with Frank Martin, but it won't allow its starting center, Damontre Harris, to transfer to N.C. State because a former assistant, Orlando Early, is currently on N.C. State's staff.

BIG difference with Beilein...
On Thursday, a Michigan spokesman clarified Beilein's stance on transfers to AnnArbor.com.The spokesman said that when a player opts to transfer from Michigan -- as Smotrycz, Carlton Brundidge and Colton Christiandid last month -- it's Beilein's preference that the player not choose a Big Ten school or a program that Michigan has on its schedule over the next two years.
That's his preference.
However, it's not a policy, the spokesman said. And it's not a hard and fast rule.

The spokesman said that should a situation arise where a transfer student shows a strong desire to attend a school Michigan has scheduled down the road, then Beilein would be open to having a discussion about the situation, and would not be absolutely opposed to allowing the transfer to occur before the discussion took place.

It's his preference that transfers don't leave for direct future competition, but not his policy.

I only bolded the last sentence, not the Big Ten that appears bolded.

How is that different? Its the samething Ryan was doing. DIdn't want the kid going to a school that Wisconsin may end up playing. As was mentioned, MANY, MANY other coaches do and have done. Bo just got caught in the media storm.

Most people acknowledge that within conference is done and are "ok" with it. Most people acknowledge its done elsewhere...and think its just as wrong.

Bo took out an entire 2nd conference.

Also, based on the post by Wizurd, it appears Beilien didnt ban him from anywhere. Just preferred that if a player can find a fit elsewhere he would prefer it. Bo just said no, fuck you Jared.

Bo did the ACC not knowing who Wisky would be matched up with in the ACC/Big Ten challenge. He also said he would have let the kid go wherever after he did the appeal. Making him jump through the hoops per say.
Honestly, can't blame him. I wouldn't want the kid coming back to bite my team either. And based on what I read, Beilien was doing the samething. Its all relative basically. And it happens often elsewhere. I think Bo took heat because most of the time, we know nothing about this. This kid went to twitter/facebook. Then the media took off with it.

Bielein said he preferred not to have him play on his schedule. But he let him go to Maryland.

Bo Ryan didnt make him go through hoops either. He had no intention of releasing him until it became bad PR.

I dont think he did anything most coaches dont. But that doesnt make it right. They should be allowed to transfer anywhere they want. The whole thing is seriously fucked up.

Well, he was a Freshman. Mr. Basketball in Iowa. He can play, and will be a solid get for someone. Possibly a 4 year starter.

Honest question....

Could he transfer to one of those schools and walk on?

I mean let's say his family is fine financially and is able to pay for his schooling. Can Bo really disallow a kid to move schools for academics?

Yes. See Coach Knight and his stubbornness regarding Lawrence Funderburke. Probably the craziest transfer ever, but Funderburke finally ended up at OSU (walk-on, in-state tuition) to spite Knight and play him twice a year lol.
