I give up something for Lent just because I feel it's good to do, not really because some church says I should. Also the no meat on Fridays thing is complete bullshit. It was instituted back when the church was incredibly corrupt (you could "purchase" a spot in heaven apparently) and wanted to help their interests in the fishing industry at the time.

The whole thing is a joke. A couple of years ago one of the local churches had accidentally scheduled a steak fry or something like that on a Friday during lent, the bishop announced in the local paper that they had scheduled the event a couple of years in advance and didn't realize that it was during lent, so he granted everyone that attended a free pass to eat meat this one time on Friday because the church had already paid for the event and they would lose money if they had to cancel. So even in the catholic church, money always trumps beliefs.

Yes I observe Lent.

LJ,

I agree that there's problems because of the ones running the church but I, myself, try not to condemn Catholicism because of the mistakes of those that seem not to follow it. An obvious example is the priest scandal. What they did was wrong, the cover up was wrong and none are above discipline...even the Pope. Those that do not "practice what they preach", IMO, is not a reason for discrediting the faith. The person should be held accountable, not the faith. :)

And it's not our fault that they make it easy to laugh at them.

I could give a fuck if you're Catholic or not, and I laugh at you, so we're even. Now, go back to your 'rock climbing'-hahaha

You know that thread is a joke right?

Oh, I forgot how many problems you have in understanding what is a joke and what isn't.

To make this OC official, "Pls be honest"
Just because someone "participates in Lent" doesn't necessarily mean they are Catholic.

Lent is not specific to just Catholicism.
