Joe Paterno, the iconic former Penn State football coach whose legend was tarnished when he was fired in the aftermath of the Jerry Sandusky scandal, has died, his family confirmed Sunday. He was 85.

It's too bad he will be remembered more for Sandusky, than his coaching greatness.

Time will change this as it did with Woody. Patenro made a mistake, no question, but that mistake should not take away what he did for 46+yrs of his life. Agreed. His greatest strengths (ability to maintain ultimate control of all situations, total confidence in his own decisions and perspectives) that made him as successful as he was, were some of his greatness weaknesses as well. Yes, what Joe Pa let allow to happen is awful, yes he should have reported it. Yes, it will be the first line in any story. However, to me that does not outweigh everything he did for Penn St, including helping the University in academics, rebuilding the new library (it is called the Joe Paterno library), instilling the values of academics in his players, and nearly always putting academics first.
I have had one high school friend play for Joe Pa and has never said a bad word about him. And went to Penn St because of Joe Pa and the academics.
In the end, it was staying too long that did Joe Pa in. He failed to understand the gravity of the situation. He should have retired years ago, and him staying thus was his undoing.

Sorry, don't think winning football games or "instilling academic values"(lol) outweighs neglecting child rape. It's satisfying to know this all came out before he died so he was able to realize he'd ruined a legacy he worked a lifetime for as he laid on his death bed.
