And to answer your question, I would of rather beat OSU to do what you said, beating top teams from a handful of conferences. But, bama deserved to be there. People are bashing LSU on this game tonight, which they were bad......but they definitely looked the best all season. ONe game is all it takes to ruin a great season.
What exactly did Bama do that meant they earned it? Their best OOC win was against mediocre PSU team. They lost their most important conference game and didn't make their conference championship game.
Lets look at Bama's best wins
PSU (mediocre Big 10 team)
Arkansas - Pretty good victory, I'll give them that... Arkansas helped to solidify this by beating KSU.
Auburn - a 5 loss team, not really that impressive.
Florida - a mediocre team at best (6 L's on the year).
It's not like Alabama had some amazing resume. At least Oklahoma State got to and won their conference championship game. I'm still of the opinion in the current system that if you don't win your conference championship, you can't play for (and have a chance for a national championship). The conference season is like pool play... if you aren't the best in your pool, you shouldn't "advance" to the title game.
If there were a playoff however, it would be more reasonable to miss out on conference, but make the tournament for a chance at the national title.
