But there is no way of knowing that.GoChiefs;1105627 wrote:I'm pretty sure he's saying he wants to see them win a competitive game. Not a loss.
Although I prefer seeing games in Harding Stadium, I do attend away games. I went to Massillon and Pittsburgh two years ago.ManO'War;1105928 wrote:But there is no way of knowing that.
Last year one of the most competitive games was Baltimore Mt St Joes...but they are from Maryland so they don't get a lot of hype. Buchtel was also a pretty good game, but according to FWK they are just a "flash in the pan", lol.
Ursuline was a great game, but it was away, so it doesn't fit his criteria either. Massillon is away this coming year, so there goes that game!
What makes games special is that you don't know if it is going to be a competitive game or a blow out by one side or the other. Some of Big Red's best games were the ones that came out of nowhere and became instant classics.
you lost that bet . I dont exactly know what a flash in the pan means ,but it sounds like a team that comes out of nowhere and has a great year . Or a fluke team . Akron Buhctel has been pretty consistant over the years and even made the state semis a few years ago and we had to beat them twice in the same year . That desription does not apply to them . You have to give them more than that and they still got two titles against us.FairwoodKing;1106091 wrote:Although I prefer seeing games in Harding Stadium, I do attend away games. I still say Buchtel is a flash in the pan. They are not consistent. They were state runners-up two years ago and then failed to make the playoffs last year. They lost to every good team on their schedule. True, they can be competitive when they want to be, but I still put them in the category of teams we should beat.
I remember the Kentucky Trinity Team that played us. They led off the season here and some boosters stated "another patsy". They stomped us pretty good 2 seasons in a row.ManO'War;1105928 wrote:But there is no way of knowing that.

What were the high schools that these guys played for? I know Roosevelt played for Buffalo St. Joe's, but I don't know the rest.ManO'War;1106751 wrote:Just recently Big Red has played against a few guys that are in the pros...Arealus Benn, Vernon Davis, Namaan Roosevelt, Lattimore, and a couple more that im forgetting.
We never sent Toledo a bill for the damages; the team doctor appologized and paid those damages: the most serious was the urinals torn from the wall.FairwoodKing;1106702 wrote:Does anybody remember why we played Louisville Trinity in 1969? We had a 2-year contract to open the season in Steubenville with Toledo Scott. Scott came in 1968 and we beat them. After the game, the football mothers served the Scott team a spaghetti dinner as they always did for visiting teams. Instead of eating the food like gentlemen, they had a food fight. To sum it up, they completely wrecked Harding School cafeteria. The Big Red officials were furious. They not only cancelled the second year of the contract, but they send Scott a bill for the damages. That meant we had to find a replacement for Scott in the opening game in 1969 and it had to be a team that was willing to travel to Steubenville. Signing up Trinity was a last resort. Big Red had a good team in 1969 (7-2-1, the tie being Massillon), but Trinity still beat us 21-8. That's the only time we ever played them in any sport.
You are correct; we did only play them once; I guess I'll have to check my records better before I post. I remember that they ran from and to the huddle on all plays. They were very well disciplined and had white athletic socks with a green shamrock on each side. Their uniforms looked new.FairwoodKing;1106702 wrote:Does anybody remember why we played Louisville Trinity in 1969? We had a 2-year contract to open the season in Steubenville with Toledo Scott. In the Massillon tie, Massillon thought they scored toward the end of the game but was called for too many men on the line. The massillon fans went nuts but the flag was clearly dropped before the play was snapped.FairwoodKing;1106702 wrote:Does anybody remember why we played Louisville Trinity in 1969? I think we as a whole get plenty of enjoyment out of our schedule. And of course we aren't playing 10 cupcakes. Sure, playing 10 cupcakes MIGHT get Big Red in the playoffs but its not going to make the team better. On the opposite end, we could play 10 stud teams but it might beat our kids up before the playoffs. I think there needs to be a healthy balance of tough games, winnable games, questionable games, and local games. I think our coaches do a great job with that. I just happen to think the number one concern is getting the team better and ready for the post season.
I'll be going but not sure about that 4 lane highway thing unless you go up to Robinson to get to 79.ManO'War;1107818 wrote:And it takes two to tango. Last year Reno mentioned on several occasions that he thought that Akron St Vincent St Mary was a go for game 3, but then they changed their mind at the last minute and we ended up with Bishop Ryan Ontario out of desperation to have 10 games.
Also, we are not realistically going to travel too far and have out team and fans (the ones that do make the trek) arrive home in the wee hours of the night. From past experience it seems that Columbus is about the limit to the west...Akron to the northwest...Warren to the north....and Zanesville to the south. The few times we have went farther (Mansfiled, Chardon, Chillicothe) were really long trips and we didn't bring that many fans. I'm curious to see how many will go to Morgantown this coming year. At least it is all 4 lane highway though.
