That extra 20 cents each time I rent a DVD is really starting to cramp my style. Price-gougers. We need the gubmint to step in and do something about this. All those actors making millions, while good, hard-working people of America are struggling to make ends meet!

Haha my sister actually commented on this last week. She wasn't actually mad...just surprised when she rented her movie.

Wow.

Eh...still a little more convenient than regular video stores, and can be cheaper too.

I don't use Redbox, never will either.

However, I feel the $1 pricing point was the big draw. $.20 isn't much, hell if anyone rents from redbox and wants me to pay the .20 each time they use it send me a PM and I'll reimburse. I'm more worried about the loss in revenue from people not having the .20 in change lying around, unless you can pay by CC.

My understanding is that the increase comes from Dodd-Frank, which makes it more difficult and expensive for companies to process super-cheap transactions. So the increased regulation of Wall Street called for by the OWS types now result in a 20% hike on Redbox prices. Similarly, convenience store prices are expected to go up, too.

So, in retard terms, do you mean that costs for transactions for debit/credit cards went up?

It is only by credit card that you can pay. I like Redbox, There is one probably a mile from my house. Makes it easy to rent movies, usually always have movies I want to see in because where I live is not a high traffic area really. Pretty good idea because harldy anyone returns movies the next day. I have three or four that I forgot about and ended up having to buy.

I honestly don't know how Blockbuster is staying in business. I know they do get some new releases before Redbox or Netflix and I am sure that helps some but I would surprised if Blockbuster is around in 5 years. Two near my house have closed within the last year.

I use Netflix Streaming right now along with RedBox, I cant wait for the day when they actually start getting new movies when they are released on DVD. Hopefully happens soon.

IVe seen a few blockbuster units like redbox around.

Yes, that's pretty much it. If a company has to pay a flat X cents for each transaction, and then the cost goes up Y cents, the flat fee increase makes a bigger difference for low-margin items. Redbox has to increase their prices by 20% just to be back to where they were before the changes. It's a little ironic that regulatory actions taken to protect the poor from evil Wall Street will disproportionately hurt . . . the poor (or at least those who buy low-margin items).

I'd be surprised if Netflix survives also. Until they start streaming good movies, it wont be any good. I havent found a movie worth watching in months. its great if you want B movies streamed, other than that, goodluck.

On a related note, I drove past an old grocery store that has been for sale for 3-4 years, I see last week that a Family Video store has purchased the building and is opening up there. Really? I thought walk in video rental stores were a thing of the past, especially given the location of this one which is maybe a block and a half from a Blockbuster store which every time I drive by there it is a ghost town.

Had alot of time to kill the other day an we went to a family video. That place was hopping. Hadnt been in a walk in video store in many years and I was surprised. OF course they had new releases that were a couple of bucks but it seemed like the whole store was full of movies for a dollar and ya got to keep them for like 5 nights. We walked out with 6 videos for 6 bucks and got to keep them for 5 days. Wasnt too bad of a deal and alot more selection than a redbox.

WHen I think of blockbuster, and I think it is a common to many, I think of expensive movies to rent. It may not be that way inside, but that is the first thought that comes into my mind.

I think if America started to make our own movies the price of renting DVD's would come down......

Agreed. $10 a ticket + food/drinks is way too expensive. I haven't been to a movie in years because its not worth it. I think the last movie I saw in the theaters was Avatar and I regretted every second of it.

Go to redbox.com rentals are a dollar if you pay online and pick it up. Im must be poor also, use redbox often.
