Do people really think The Prestige and Vision Quest are under rated? Most people I know consider them to be amazing movies I wouldn't call either of them under rated.

I'll throw in Sex Drive its a movie I love and I used to be amazed that people had never heard of it or seen it. Pretty hilarious movie.

Reign of Fire. It isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be.

Jingle All the Way. Same as above. I mean, PUT THAT COOKIE DOWN...NOW!

I think underrated is a term that means different things for different people. I think a lot of people are defining a movie as underrated here because a movie did not receive critical acclaim or an acedmy award. Another definition could be movies that were not seen by a large audience. Movies like "Big Trouble in Little China" and "Vision Quest" did not receive critical acclaim, but they are considered Cult Classics by many people, especially those who are over the age of 30. These movies were viewed by scores of people on video and on Cable Television tens of times on over. I would agree with you in that regard those movies are not underrated.

To me, an underrated movie would be one that nobody talks about or even when they do talk about it they said it is a mediocre or even a bad movie. I would put the Bruce Willis flick, "Striking Distance" in this category or "Jingle All the Way".
