If you just look at the talent traded then sure the Padres probably got the better end. These so called experts aren't taking Votto and Mes into account. Boxberger could be great, but he could also be equal to or worse than Burton/Masset/Ondrusek. With the Cards and Brewers taking hits the time is now for the Reds.

The Padres did well. However, the marginal value the Reds helps their team. Unless the Reds were going to turn around and get even more than Latos for those four, I'm not sure you can say it's a bad deal because at least 2 of these guys the Reds didn't have an immediate use for. The third, Grandal, was still blocked by a guy the Reds feel will be better (Mesoraco is MLB ready, better defensively and more highly touted than Yasmani). Like I said before, Boxberger is the guy I think the team could really use in 2 years.

If he wins 18 or more games this year, do you consider it a good deal for the Reds? How many games does he need to average winning the next 4 years to consider this a good trade for Cincy? I thought the Hamilton trade was OK after the first year but soon after it looked like crap. I sure hope this turns out better than that trade.

Winning games is meaningless as a pitcher. Cueto only won 9 last year but honestly, even in a shortened season (missed a month to start and end the year), he could have won 15.

Saw Cody Ross mentioned on a trade rumor site. He can't stay healthy but if he did I think reds fans would hate him as much as Stubbs. He strikes out too frequently for consideration

Drew Stubbs, 205 K in 604 AB = 1 every 2.94 AB
Jay Bruce, 158 K in 585 AB = 1 every 3.70 AB
Chris Heisey, 78 K in 279 AB = 1 every 3.58 AB
Ross would be a great addition because he can hit lefties (career .919 OPS against lefties) and he only struck out every 4.22 AB's, less than the other 3 projected outfielders. Chris Heisey can't hit lefties. He hit .197 last year against lefties. He hit .271 with 17 of his 18 HR's against righties. His AB/K ratio was every 1 out of 2.54 AB's against lefties, which was significantly more frequent than his 3.58 AB's overall.
Cody Ross would be a welcome upgrade over Heisey against lefties, but I agree that he definitely isn't the best option. Definitely other guys out there IMO.

His sample size against LHP is way too small. Gomes got basically every start against one, Heisey was put in there when a dominant LHP was starting and Bruce got a day off. Not exactly a representation of what he can do, although it could be true. I think Walt wants to be done with the platoon in left, so really how a guy can hit RHP is more important since that's about 75% of what they will face.

I have faith in Heisey. However, can the Reds really go into the year with those 3 as their outfield options? Can they do so without (as of yet), a proven 4th outfielder/backup?
They need someone else, whether that guy is brought in to start, platoon with Heisey or strictly be a backup. I'm not as high on Dave Sappelt as some either. The guy is going to be lucky to stick in the majors. They need more depth.

I cringe at the thought of having to watch Drew Stubbs for another year, although he does provide some good laughs trying to play any ball close to the wall in center.

I was talking to a friend and we both agreed that is what frustrates us the most about Stubbs. Bruce needs to show some progress. If he can be consistent they can figure out some mix of Heisey/Sappelt/Stubbs in left and center. Walt said at Redsfest he didn't want a platoon like they had with Nix and Lewis the last 2 years so take that FWIW. Sappelt getting something like 30/20/10 starts in LF/CF/RF and being a pinch runner is probably what they are envisioning for him this year.

Kind of disappointed to hear we were talking with Kubel, but wouldn't give him the money he asked for. He just signed with the D-backs for 2 yrs/15 mil. Not that outrageous for a guy who usually goes to for 270/20 HR/80 RBI.
