Bronson says he wasn't the same last year. In more or less words, he has vowed that what he showed last year was not going to be "normal" for him. While most guys would say this anytime because of beliefs in their own ability, Arroyo has been a fine-tuned machine of consistency for a while. I'd expect that he will improve at least a little bit on his 2011. If not, the Reds can't even let him take the mound as a starter all year. The negatives are just too much, especially if he isn't producing innings. Look at the trends:

2006 - 240.2 IP, 3.29 ERA (right after a new contract)
2007 - 210.2 IP, 4.23 ERA
2008 - 200 IP, 4.77 ERA (many felt he had imploded this year, IP, WHIP, BAA and ERA blew up)
2009 - 220.1 IP, 3.84 ERA (right after a new contract)
2010 - 215.2 IP, 3.88 ERA
2011 - 199 IP, 5.07 ERA
2012 - ??? (while he got an extension during last season, this is the beginning of a new extension)

I'd expect somewhere around 215 IP and 4.35 ERA from Arroyo. Factoring in familiarity and age, this is reasonable, and if that's the case, it's easily good enough for the Reds to survive with him as the 4th or 5th SP. The key will be someone else like Bailey, Leake, Wood or Chapman (long shot) taking complete command of the 3rd slot and contributing consistent innings, knowing that Arroyo is the guy who could be yanked any given night because he's allowed 8 runs in the first 2 innings and the bullpen rest will be out of whack for the rest of the week. The guys ahead of him need to be consistent and he's tolerable.

Isn't it about 12M per? This includes deferrals, so if he's traded, that money has to be paid to him by the Reds.

I believe he's owed some deferred money over the next 10 years...but I guess in-terms of payroll, it's about 6.5M a year. I guess if you traded him, the Reds would still be paying those deferral payments even if they don't pay the 2012 and 2013 contract. Makes him even tougher to trade...

Love this trade, got to show Votto you want to win. It's nearly impossible to get an ace before his is arb eligible. That's what adds value to the trade.

I bet they try to resign Coco now, hopefully he doesn't have another option and they can get him for about $5mil.

Arroyo isn't moving, he basically has a no trade clause. If he is traded all the deferred money in due up front. The Reds can't afford that.

That right there is huge. The Tribe gave up a monster haul to get Jiminez, and he only has 2 years until free agency. The Reds gave up a huge haul, but don't have to watch him walk for 4 years.

You overpay talent wise to get a top of the line pitcher with a reasonable team controlled contract for 4 years. They aren't easy to find, so there is always a premium on them if they ever get on the market.

FWIW, seems the initial perception about this deal from various people around the league is that the Reds got taken.

I see, I was looking at Baseball Reference, and they had him at 12M this year, and 11M next year. I'm guessing that includes the deferred money from him previous contract. Bottomline, he's not going anywhere. Honestly, I don't think Arroyo was ever healthy last year. He can be a very serviceable 4 or 5 guy in the rotation, imo.

I saw where Olney feels like the Reds got hosed. Also, you have to wonder why the Padres would give up someone pitching so well, and making so little for the next 4 years. They didn't need Alonso, as they have Rizzo. It's a little disconcerting to me.

Alonso, Grandal, and Boxberger COULD turn out to be great. We know that Latos is, and that's a TOR starter.
