As dagassman76 said Brent Steiner was just elected and had nothing to do with it. I don't plan on targeting him. I don't know him but for some reason his name sounds familiar. I think he might have played for coach Schrock and probably wouldn't be for this.

If anyone wants to be part of this in any way let me know. I am going to contact Aaron Dorksen and see if we can get a write up in The Daily Record.

The problem is that the law doesn't allow for their removal for making an unpopular decision. A petition can't simply say "we no longer like these people", there have to be supportable charges of malfeasance. The petition does not cause there to be a recall election, it is filed in court and the court decides whether the activities charged in the petition justify removal from office.

There's many ways you can attack this.

Like why is the school board not addressing the girls basketball coach flipping out on fans? Nonfeasance.

Why isn't the school board acting on Becker and Robinson. One of them lied to Coach Schrock. That compromises the integrity of the Athletic Director and Superintendent Office. Nonfeasance.

Becker and Robinsons actions alone sound like Misfeasance to me.

Melissa Craemer-Smiths telling her husband that Schrock was done and he went around Wadsworth and the community telling people. She should not be speaking for the board.

Keibs actions sound like Malfeasance. It's seems to me like he took aggressive unjustified action against Schrock when he gave him a negative review. Robinson said it herself that she knew nothing about this evaluation. If this evaluation wasn't directed then why was Keib doing it.

The hole thing sounds like Malfeasance by every. All they had to do was ask him. He was 90-95% sure he was going to retire anyway. They wanted to go after Schrock and went hard when they didn't need to.


I don't know. I'm not an attorney but is we get one and consult with them they can tell us whether we have a case or not.

I don't want to recall the Board. I just want the truth and for over a month they have been tip-toeing around this and trying to cover their ass. But we still haven't heard the truth.

Until they decide to tell the truth I'm continuing on with this. When they decide to be honest I will stand down.

I don't think anyone has ever challenged them other than a few angry people that show up at Board meeting claiming they aren't voting for them again. The Board will continue acting the way they do if no one challenges them.

That's a quote from Coach Schrock in today's article in The Daily Record. Do you really think the coach would want this to continue on anymore? I definitely agree that this entire situation has been handled inappropriately; however, it sounds like Coach Schrock wanted everything to be done quietly and quickly. I don't know that continuing with an investigation would be desired by the coach. I can't speak for him, but it seems like the meeting with his players, parents, and staff was meant to bring closure to this episode. I know that (former) players, students, and other community members feel that they deserve an explanation, but if Coach Schrock has moved past the issue, does it make sense for you to continue to bring it up? Just something to think about.

I just find it interesting that the meeting Coach Schrock had with the players had to be announced in the Daily Record. Why the need for the publicity? That could have been very easily handled within the school: morning announcements, athlete/parent emails, coach to player texts... just something to think about.

I agree and disagree. I don't think this is acceptable behavior by this board or administration and I believe the community should ask the questions and get to the bottom of it. I am sure Coach Schrock does not want to be part of it, but he did say in that article that all he wanted was the truth. I know the community needs to heal and move on. But I am scared that this is allowing the BOE and administrators (Keib) to get away with this behavior. And that is unacceptable. I know you can vote them off come election time, however I still think this allows these BOE's personal agendas continue until they are voted off...

Like I said in my last post I don't think the board has ever be challenged other than some angry people showing up to the board meeting and they will continue to act in with the same arrogance if they aren't challenged.

Like I said this is mostly so he can learn the truth but this in a small way is to help protect the other coaches at the school and the new coach that comes in. If I can (1) get them to tell the truth and/or (2) to take a reasonable common sense approach when dealing with these coach I will be happy.

No coach should have to worry about a rogue administrator(s) trying to take them down. We have to hold them accountable so this doesn't happen again.

As Yogi always said "It ain't over til its over and the fat lady sings". The only thing I'm hearing is voices of outraged Smithies!

Hmmmm You must be the person who wrote the part of the evaluation Coach Schrock is all about himself not the kids. It is a shame he felt he couldn't go to the school to talk with his team:/

Knowing your father as I do, I know it is about the kids. I don't understand why it was at the church and why it had to be announced in the DR. Remember, all everyone is trying to understand is what the heck is going on.

It's ashame that the BOE got involved in this delema. Unfortunately, because of there clueless behavior this will remove a couple of good candidates for the position.

I think the Daily Record was there because the community wanted to know and the daily record was going to report on it regardless. It's easier and more accurate if Daily Record personnel are there taking notes and then writing a story. Otherwise they would have had to track down students and parents. When you have people trying to recall stuff from memory things can get distorted.

This may take a little longer coming along as I originally thought. I want to make sure I am doing this the correct way plus I'm working on limited time as I am taking 17 credit hours in Akron and working at Sams part-time.

But as soon as I get it up and running I will let you know.

This recall thing isn't going to work unless someone has facts rather than rumors. So unless someone knows something there is nothing we can do other than keep pressure on the board of education to tell the truth.

I have a little different perspective on this than some of you. No doubt this could have been handled better. But Schrock has to shoulder some of the blame too. Anyone who has been around football for 45 years knows that the time to announce whether your staying or going is the week after the season ends. If he was truly concern about the kids and the program he would have announced at season's end his intentions and that would have been that. He had 35 years to think about it and shouldn't have needed another 60 days.

It seems to me that his selfishness in thinking of himself first instead of the kids and the program contributed to this whole mess.

Seriously? I think the issue wasn't him being self consumed, so much as trying to decide if you want to give up something that has been your life for 45 years. I don't think Coach Schrock was in a position to think about this toward the end of the season since he was probably paying more attention to preparing his team for the playoffs! I think some time to reflect after the season with a clear mind was the best way to handle it on his part. The administration of Smithville could have very easily waited until January out of courtesy to let him make up his mind on what was best for him and his program. I hope Coach Schrock is at peace with his decision and enjoys retirement to it's fullest....he has earned that opportunity!

Definitely an interesting perspective, Jake. However, you must not be keeping up with the story. In Schrock's interview after his meeting, he said he was about 90-95% certain what his decision would be. That shows that there was still doubt in his mind. I'm guessing the reason he wanted to wait to make his decision was so that he could choose and then bolt to Florida to prevent all the hubbub that has now blown up in full force.

I agree that a convenient time for someone to make a decision is directly after year's end, but those decisions are generally made after several poor seasons in order to prevent oneself from getting axed. The smithies had a nice year this season, and being a 35 year veteran I don't the godfather expected to be fired. I see where you're coming from, but I think it is silly and outlandish to put the blame on Schrock. He gave his time to the school for 40+ years as an employee, the least they could do is give him several months to think.

I hope you are not purposely misconstruing what I said. I said Schrock shares some of the blame. Not all of it or even most of it. The fact of the matter is that, even after the fact, he admits that he was only "95%" sure he was going to step down. That, in my view, shows a complete disregard for the program if he was 95% sure he was going to retire but then chose to wait until after the first of the year to tell anyone. With or without this controversy he would have put Smithville at least 2 months behind any coach search. So even if Keib didn't have his fingerprints all over this I think Schrock was doing a disservice to his employer and the program by delaying the announcement of his decision.

This also highlights the pitfalls of having a non-teacher or faculty member as your head coach. When you allow a coach to retire as a teacher but continue with the fun part of the Friday Night Lights there is never any incentive left to walk away from the coaching. In my view, you never have a head coach who isn't a faculty member and you never allow them to continue coaching if they want to retire as a teacher. I may be mistaken but think this is the approach Orrville took with McMillian. Had they not, he would probably be trying to still hang on too.

I have no dog in this fight. I only know what I read on these boards and in the paper. I don't have the inside information some of you apparently have. But from someone who has no emotional attachment to this one way or the other, that's how I see it.

It doesn't really matter if they hired a coach in December or if it's in March. Either way the coach can't have contact with the players until June or July and even then it's only for 10 days. If a coach was hired in March he'd still have plenty of time to come up with a offseason schedule for the summer. Heck, I'm a member of USA football. If I got hired as head coach today I could have a team store up and running, have a Captains Pack ordered, have practice plans made up, have coach evaluations sheets (for parents and students) made up, inventory checklists, have QB wristbands made up, and have interactive playbooks and films all ready to go by tonight. The athletic director, if he is doing his job correctly, should have fund raisers and passing camps set up.


Let's look at your having the football coach being a teacher thing. Let's say we have a coach that the players, parents and coaches respect as a coach. He is winning league titles consistently and taking his team to the playoffs consistently. But in the classroom he just isn't getting it done. Their could be instance where they won't get rid of this horrible teacher because the football program is doing so good. And lets remember this is ultimately about the children's education.

Or another instance where the school district is forced to let go of staff because of budget cuts. If the head football coach is a teacher and let go should he be forced to resign because he is no longer a teacher? Or the school district is forced to cut the Teacher of the year or the horrible teacher from the scenario from above. There are some districts that would keep the horrible teacher........that's playing with fire.

I don't really think you can say having a teacher/faculty member as head coach is better than someone who isn't and vice versa.
