I just couldn't imagine them trying to sell a PPV with Jones/Vera II as a headliner not that I see Vera beating Shogun.

This - unless Vera KO's Shogun in video game style I don't see any way they could put him in a title match. I think if Vera wins he should fight Gustafsson.

You could make a decent case that Vera should get cut from the UFC with a loss on Saturday. Guys who are in that discussion do not deserve title shots, period. </SPAN>

Losing to shogun isn't ground for getting cut when you're expected to lose. Honestly, Vera has nothing to lose and shogun has everything to lose.

Vera could easily be in that position, the guy has lost 3 of his last 4 and if he loses to Shogun that would be 4 of 5 with his only win being against Eliot Lewis.

He lost to Couture, Jones, Thiago Silva, and possibly Shogun. Definitely not slouches by any means, but still lost 4 of 5 (if he loses Saturday). The UFC typically frowns on that kind of record.

I agree - but this seems like a special circumstance. Didn't he take this on shorter notice? He's pretty much being fed to the wolves, if he puts on a good show i doubt he gets cut.

Oh I am not suggesting that he should, I think Vera is a good enough talent that he needs to be in the UFC. I was just saying that based on his recent record he definitely could be cut with another loss and therefore should not really be in the mix for a title shot.

I don't think he gets cut either, and probably doesn't deserve it unless he is just awful. My point was it could be argued, and that tells you how riduculous this situation is.

That said, I think Dana is flat out lying to build suspense on Saturday anyways. Vera could finish Shogun in spectacular fashion and he still won't get a shot. The fans would revolt.

I thought Vera won the Randy Couture fight. Machida is also 1-3 in his last 4 but I felt he definitely won the Rampage fight and outclassed him, he was just a bit tentative early in the fight.

Machida easily won the third, but you can't be flat for 2 rounds and expect to win the entire fight. In Japan i think they judge on the entire fight, not just rounds.

So what're everyone's picks for the main card? I'm going with:
Shogun
Machida
Varner
Swick

Really pulling for Varner, i was a fan of his back when he fought in WEC. There are some good fights on the undercard too. I'm hoping Phil Davis shows some improvement from the Rashad fight.

He was tentative the first two rounds, but what did Rampage do to win those rounds besides come forward and swing at air? Lyoto was at least landing hard leg kicks. Rampages most significant strikes were foot stomps against the cage. I would have to watch the fight again though.

I have the same picks as you, wouldn't shock me if Lauzon submitted Varner in a scramble though. Swick is really good but he has been out for over 2 years, no idea what to expect from him.

A lot of people think that moving forward = winning.

I agree, it's effective aggression and striking though, I don't remember Rampage landing anything clean the entire fight.

Looking forward to a Machida win. I am a Rampage fan also and no way did he win that fight.
