Wood may not be "really good", but honestly I'm not sure how you can give up a left-handed SP who is not a free agent for 5 more years and who had a very promising 2010 season.

Had he not completely imploded last year, he wouldn't even be in this discussion. What is discouraging are the things that made him look so promising (control and location of pitches to right-handers) went completely AWOL.

Not sure how you can give him to a team in the same division as you either.Azubuike24;1022630 wrote:Wood may not be "really good", but honestly I'm not sure how you can give up a left-handed SP who is not a free agent for 5 more years and who had a very promising 2010 season.

Yeah idk what happened to him last year..he was one of my biggest disappointments from last season. I had high hopes for his first full time season as s starter

So will Marshall be the closer now too? 7 career saves. Or are trying to get CoCo, Madson or someone else?

The article I saw said they would keep him in the setup role.sportswizuhrd;1022645 wrote:So will Marshall be the closer now too? 7 career saves. Or are trying to get CoCo, Madson or someone else?

If the Reds add Marshall's salary (over 3M), there is no way they could sign Madson and they would be stupid to sign Coco. I'm not selling Masset or Chapman as the potential closer, but the marginal gains you would get over adding Cordero at a fairly steep price (5-7M for 2-3 years) wouldn't be worth it. Not if you acquire Marshall and have the options of Masset, Chapman and Marshall who are all superior in-terms of pure stuff than Coco.

This is why I asked...wildcats20;1022647 wrote:The article I saw said they would keep him in the setup role.
After acquiring Mat Latos in a trade with the Padres last week, Reds GM Walt Jocketty suggested he'd like to focus on bolstering his bullpen. Cincinnati is without a nominal closer as of now - incumbent Francisco Cordero remains on the free agent market - so perhaps Marshall, who has settled in as an effective late-inning reliever for the Cubs the past couple seasons, could man that role for the Reds.

I like this trade. We get a dominant guy for someone who may or may not ever be a serviceable pitcher in the majors. Wood was terrible last year. He's a guy that has to place his pitches cause he doesn't have great stuff, and he was unable to do that. I see Wood being a 3 guy, at best.

The trade is eased a bit given that the prospects were nothing. It would be better if the Reds would discuss extending Marshall.

Reds acquire LHP Sean Marshall from Cubs for LHP Travis Wood, OF Dave Sappelt and minor league IF Ronald Torreyes.

Sappelt was an extra. Sounds like they might be talking extension with Marshall though. That would make the deal good.

Reds better be good next year, cause they've pretty much given up the farm system they've built over the past few years. What's next Billy Hamilton and Denis Phipps for a long relief guy? I like the trade until I saw that Sappelt and Torreyes were involved. Too much to give up for a setup guy, imo. Especially when you don't even have a closer yet.

Exactly how I feel. If the Reds don't win next year then f*** us.se-alum;1025135 wrote:Reds better be good next year, cause they've pretty much given up the farm system they've built over the past few years. I don't know why the Reds don't just do what the Yankees do and buy whoever they need to fill holes. That always works good for us.

Thing is, I'm not against giving up prospects, but 7 top prospects for 2 players, one of which is a reliever, is just too much.charliehustle14;1025157 wrote:Exactly how I feel. If the Reds don't win next year then f*** us.

We spent do long getting the farm system built up, but it only took 3 weeks to nearly crush it. That being said, if we win next year... I'll be happy.

Wow I'm not liking this. Better go out and get a closer and an upgrade in left now and go all out.

Looks like the Reds will go balls to the wall for 2 years, then the rebuilding process will commence, once again.
