Coach has definately done things right. Started the right programs, involved at all levels, sets expectations high, and utilizes an effective amount of discipline. The program is heading in the right direction. Hope this continues throughout the years. This year has been fun so far and of course there are a lot of fans following the team this year. Can't wait to see the new turf.

Is this working for Orrville? Numbers are down and losses are up for the Jr High and High School teams. Is it too much to soon? Or, could it be that soccer is taking some talented kids away from football. What does everyone think?

That is a good possibility look at Wooster, many different sports programs spread talent out, not saying anything wrong with this just part of the facts of having many sports programs. Probably hurts the smaller schools more with numbers.I do know there were a lot of kids at Wooster that would of played football if there wouldnt of been a soccer program.

No offense to soccer, but I don't see any kids on that team that should be playing football.

It's just cyclical...but we've never been a dominant program in the middle schools..but we seem to get 6-7 kids from each grade that once they combine at the HS level they make an impact.

Not sure what "too much too soon" means. We've had some good years lately. Regional final or deeper 3 times since 2006 is a good run.

Back in the 80's & 90's Orrville had a lot of factory type jobs that no longer exist. Maybe those moms & dads raised a different kind of kid compared to today. Grittier, nastier, tougher. Orrville used to be a town that was blue collar (work hard, play hard). Not sure we're that anymore. Our big employers are made up of people who are choosing to put down roots in other towns and put their kids in those schools.

Times are different today too. Little Billy has to get a trophy win or lose. We don't keep score..don't want to hurt feelings. Maybe losing something & not getting that trophy motivated a kid to be better & develops character.

Look at that 2009 team that went to the regional finals for example. Hoobler, Besancon, Sam Miller, Corbett..all gamers with a little nasty in them too. Brings out that swagger.

Those same 4 helped the basketball team to the state finals later that winter/spring...playing the same way...nasty & tough.

You don't necessarily need that on a team to be successful, but it never hurt.

soccer is taking kids. Orrville is not big enough to have all the programs they do and be competitive, at least in the OCC.

Good points RedRider1. Maybe Orrville is getting away from that blue collar town. My too much too soon was directed at the youth tackle football program. I was just wondering if that may be hurting our Jr High numbers recently. Although I know a few parents from Creston that swear by it. I like "Grittier, nastier, tougher"..should be on a T-shirt..

Got it. I kind of like the tackle program...I know some are 100% against it...but I think the sooner you can teach technique & get kids used to contact, the better...as long as the correct technique is being taught.

I just hope we come out with a different offensive gameplan this Friday. Some razzle dazzle and some trick plays or something. I just want to see something different! Is that asking too much? Who cares if we lose lets go down with a fight!

I am against the pee wee program. Here is why the kids do not need contact that early. You want a team that has some "nasty" make them wait to hit until 7th grade. They will attack and never look back. I don't believe the pee wee program helps a program in high school. Look at Rittman they had a league for a long time back in the 90's. You know who played there...Orrville kids that ended up never playing in high school.

Sadly enough, football numbers are down everywhere. It's not just an Orrville thing. I've never seen so many schools not even fielding freshman squads.
Norwayne is probably the only program that's growing, but that's because they're winning. A few losses and they'll backslide to reality.

Fear of injury? Now that more is known about concussions, or at least a connection between concussions & long term repercussions, are parents encouraging kids to do other things?

Completely their right to do so, but could that be a reason for low numbers?

Too many other things this day in age to distract the youth. Ipods, xbox, cell phones and all the other non sense that keeps kids from even sitting down and watching a football game. If they never see it how would they ever wanna do it? I have seen 8 year old kids with cell phones. Unreal!

maybe Norwayne is growing because they have a really good coaching staff as well. Kids want to play for the guy. Who knows with the staff they have we may be looking at the next small school power in Ohio for many years to come. Although it will take great coaching for that to happen because I don't see them having great talent year after year. That is an area that Orrville has been blessed in for a long time.

Great point. If they win another state title this year is it fair to say their tradition is better than ours? We would have more playoff appearances but only won the thing 1 time. What do you think? If so they will have surpassed our "great" tradition in only 2 years!
