I told them they should have saved the money on the stickers and had Obama put that toward the the budget that he can't figure out....

That makes sense...especially since coaching days are limited in the summer. With captains there can at least be some accountability in the summertime.

The captains this year were not selected until after 2-a-days....I think in years past they were selected prior to the summer, then captains weren't showing up to lift/condition during the summer...so it was waited.
This is a pretty good measuring stick if you ask me, what I mean is it was an honor to be a captain of ANY sport in high school EXPECIALLY football!!! For the team and coaches to be picking these kids to be the leaders of the team and then even have to worry about them showing up really says something about where these kids heads are at! That is just nuts to me.... I remember captains going to peoples houses when they didn't show up for lifting or passing leagues! Of course that really didn't happen much, in the summer you couldn't fit in the weight room. Some of us would pull double duty, hit the boys club gym with Jerry Lane and then to the football weight room. Coach Costello and Burk made sure if you were not in the gym they let you know that they knew you weren't there!!!
Times they are a changing!!!!

Then when they get to the weightroom, lets hope they aren't just going through the motions. I was told that there was some of that this past off-season. Kids were showing up so that it looked good on the sign-in sheet, but that was the onlt weight they lifted...the weight of that pen/pencil...SAD!

All you had to do is look at the field and you could see that was happening and must of been happening a lot!

Yeah it is ultimately up to the kids to put in the work. I just don't remember anyone worth mention who wasn't putting in the work back then? That is what shocks me the most I guess. Perhaps you are not a great or gifted athlete but everyone can lift, run and put in the offseason work to be the best version of you possible for the season! This intire aspect probably worries me more than coaches, offensive style or anything else. If the kids are not willing to put in the work it just aint gonna happen. Makes me think of old Smitty.... He would say defense aint about being an athlete its about knowing where to be, help D, one pass away, and HEART! Old rider I know you remember having to yell PISTOLS!!!!

Z DRILL...ohhhhh HOURS of Z drill!! And if you were in the paint and didn't have those pistols out...Smitty was cerrtainly gonna let you know!

I do not remember too many kids that were in the weightroom and not doing what they were supposed to be doing back then either simply because either an upper classman or a coach would be up in your grill for slap dicking around!

Yeah and if you were too lazy to cut off baseline he would go into a tirade about how you were gonna quit your family.... Your old lady.... Your job.... And be a bum forever. If you were lazy on the court you would be lazy in life! And he would not want you in a fox hole with him!!!

Plenty of bear crawl rats in the 90's...One of my fondest memories was my senior year when the power plant had the fire and the city electric was out for a few days. The schools were closed and we practiced two days in the gym with no lights and no heat. On the third day Smitty scheduled a practice @ Triway (yes we practiced in the PIT). It was a Saturday and our practice started at 10:00am. When we were done practicing the Triway team was beginning to take the floor for their regular practice.

Of course, Smitty and Randy Montgomery started talking and before you knew it, we were scrimmaging the Titans. The very first play, Ryan Lent of Triway dunks the ball on a back-door alley-oop! Needless to say...that was not a good start! So Smitty told the Triway boys to get off the floor and we began to run rats. We ran until finally Coach Montgomery asked Smitty "are you done yet"? Smitty said "No I'm not done, I'm not tired yet". So we ran some more....Oh and then we continued to finish the scrimmage and did not leave Triway till after 3:00. Just another great story about Smitty!

Lent. What I'd give to have another Lent come through our system. Or a Rottman/Breneman combo would do. Thanks for sharing!

It does not suprise me one bit really! The economy stinks and a very unclear future showed its head! It points directly at the current demographics of this town.

Its gonna be real sad to see the cuts being made if this thing fails again in the spring. Could you imagine if the pay-to-participate fees would go up like their talking in Hillsdale??? Hillsdale may have to impose a $300 fee per sport....talk about having low numbers now, if we had to implement that kind of fee how many kids would be left out because of cost??

Exactly, I knew it was heading this direction. You hit the nail on the head when you mention demographics of this town.....not many are tied to the schools anymore.

I thought we were already doing the "pay to play"? I know it was only $50 when I was in school and a lot of the time if you participated in the lift-a-thon or other community service projects you didn't have to pay. I do know their is a family that takes care of the entire middle school's participation fees so that kids can play as many sports as they want, instead of worrying about the cost.

Even if we pass a levy next year you don't start collecting taxes til the next year, so there will be cuts. We'll be in the red by the end of next year.

It is going to get ugly. The timing of all the stuff...field, track, schools could not have been worse! We all know on this site that was not the same money but most of the community does not get that. Wait till we have 40 in a class and see what the community says then...bad stuff.

This.

Big IF about it passing in the spring too. Have to hope for more than a different electorate turning out. If it's a good story to tell...then tell it to more people. Have discussions with the community. Let their concerns be heard....take the time to explain it to people who aren't school administrators that understand the x's and o's of school funding.

Doesn't help when the Daily Record trots out an article saying we were on the "financial autobahn" for the last 10 years. What a bunch of BS.....2 schools were built with state money and the dollars for the other were approved by the voters.

Schools/teachers already can't win. Dealing with ever increasing state regs (unfunded of course) and the increasingly litigious society we live in...you could pay me double what they earn and I wouldn't take it.

Only going to get worse now. Do more with less...that might as well be the motto for the country.

Powerful indeed. It's like the president/mayor/governor all rolled into one.

Hope you still recognize the town...

Well at least someone is getting some use out of it-maybe our so called "junior" leaders can go watch and learn a thing or two. Maybe Davault can go also I am sure he can take a page or 2 out of Joe Harbour's book

Thats funny you mention that because I jokingly told my brother that with them practicing on our field, all the coaches could go observe and take notes....free coaching clinic on our own field. Its not appropriate to share what his response was to me....brotherly love thats all! LOL
