The Associated Press is reporting that Joe Paterno will retire at the end of the season. The real shame of the timing of this is that his 400 plus wins will be second to the disgusting scandal and the actions of two assistant coaches on his staff. What do all of you on the OC think his legacy will be. :(

I'd argue the legacy of those who could have prevented children from being raped and didn't falls below just about anyone here.

I didn't allow child rape anywhere around me sorry!! Stop putting this man on a pedestal because he won 400+ games. He had a chance to stop further harm to kids and didn't do it dammit. Look up until Sat I loved JoPa, great for college football and young men, however that is now fully reversed in light of this scandal!

In the grand scheme of things winning football games is irrelevant as compared to the humanity and dignity of a child being violated.

I never aided and abetted the rape of children by looking the other way. So I can confidently say my legacy is morally superior to that of Paterno's.

He won a lot of football games. Good for him. He stunk up the place as a human being.

Apparently it was his decision, hasn't talked to board of trustees. They are meeting tonight so forcing him out now is still possible.

The travesty is not that his legacy will be overshadowed by this. The travesty is what happened to innocent children. Joe did nothing to stop that, he deserves everything he will get and probably much more.

Paterno full statement: STATE COLLEGE, Pa., Nov. 9, 2011 -- I am absolutely devastated by
the developments in this case. I grieve for the children and their families,
and I pray for their comfort and relief.

I have come to work every day for the last 61 years with one clear goal in
mind: To serve the best interests of this university and the young men who have
been entrusted to my care. I have the same goal today.

That's why I have decided to announce my retirement effective at the end of
this season. At this moment the Board of Trustees should not spend a single
minute discussing my status. They have far more important matters to address. I
want to make this as easy for them as I possibly can.
This is a tragedy. It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit
of hindsight, I wish I had done more.

My goals now are to keep my commitments to my players and staff and finish the
season with dignity and determination. And then I will spend the rest of my
life doing everything I can to help this University.

Well, Skyhook does seem to be pretty religious. And with some branches of the church, "turning a blind eye to child molesting to maintain pristine image" is pretty much as big a part of the regular routine as going to church on Sunday, so I can understand why he'd not have anything negative to say about Joe's legacy. Good enough for the church, good enough for JoePa.

legacy for jim tressel is he is known as cheater and lied to NCAA and should never coach in NCAA again. good legacy lol.

Couldn't be said better! Paterno dropped the ball here. I have no respect for him -- not that it matters to him. I could care less about PSU and Paterno...I wouldn't mind if the university folded.

His 409 wins will not be overshadowed by the actions of two of his assistants, but rather by his knowledge of what one of his assistants did and his decision not to act properly in order to protect that person, instead of protecting innocent children from a monster. Had he reported the incident to the authorities 10 years ago like the law mandates, then this wouldn't be an issue for him and his legacy.

Also, if you don't think that he knew, listen to the statement he made at his house last night and read his statement today. He called them victims and he said that "This is a tragedy. It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more." That is a very clear admission that he knew what had happened and that he knows he could have done more.

Football wins < protecting innocent children from a rapist pedophile.

The sheer repulsiveness of what was allowed to continue after he knew about it in '98 cancels out anything else this man ever accomplished. Harsh? You better damn well believe it's Harsh, dozens (maybe hundreds) of boys were sodomized because an old man wanted to save the reputation of himself, a football team and an old pervert buddy of his.

IMO, he should step down immediately...the harrassment, taunts, etc. that this team will be subject to will be brutal, especially with McQueary and Paterno on the sideline
