Yes. For me, 9-3 was the benchmark.

My thoughts exactly Lane. Apparently down 14 with 2:40 to go...Brian Kelly thought it was over and decided not to use ANY timeouts to at least give them a shot.

I've been attacked on here before for saying this, but i don't think Brian Kelly is that great of a coach. I think he is decent, but ND is underachieving this season. They should have 1 loss at most.

I'd have to agree with you, but I have thought the same thing since he was at UC.

Chris Brown visiting unofficially is huge, as there was a lot of talk that his dad wanted him to stay home and go to South Carolina. He was also supposed to visit Va Tech (I think) but the family has now said he is taking no more visits other than this week to ND. Mom and Dad are coming with him so they can see it for themselves.

Judging by their comments, they were very impressed by their trips so far.

I was actually hoping for a Champs Sports Bowl appearance after week 1. Minus the o-line and secondary this team is as young as anybody, and I don't think I'm the only one who won't be missing the secondary. I don't really see any reason to troll this bunch but whatever floats your boat. Rees had four games under his belt before the start of this year. He's got potential to be one of the better pocket passers in the country over the next two years. Not to mention the two guys we have sitting on the bench aren't exactly Nate Montanas anymore. I don't mind the criticism of Kelly but I'll stand by the guy because this is different than recent memory. He is actually picking up the pieces and structuring something where as Weis rode Quinn, the offense, and McDonalds all the way out the door.

Amazing that the secondary has the most experience on the team, yet they are the worst group by a long shot. The defensive scheme was set up to help those guys out, but unfortunately the front 7 is still too young and raw to handle the added pressure.

You can't win big football games with a below average secondary. If anything, the recruits should see they can come in and play almost immediately back there.

It's also way too early to criticize Kelly at this point. He was literally handed a defense that has very little talent, sans T'eo. When you watch the best teams in the country, they all play great defense. BK has recruited great on that side of the ball, but it's going to take some time. Remember that was a huge reason Weis was fired, and it's going to take time for BK to get this defense to where it needs to be.

The defense's inability to get off the field on 3rd down is its biggest issue. Calabrese's personal foul, Shembo getting pump faked, and Filer not being under control and allowing a pretty immobile Barkley to run 10 yards for first downs is unacceptable. Speaking of Filer, it occurred to me while I was trying to fall asleep last night that he was on the field. I don't remember Ishaq playing at all, and I do believe he had a tweet earlier in the week about breaking team rules. I didn't see anywhere, but I'd guess he was suspended for the game? Missing Ethan Johnson hurt the d as well. Overall just a bad effort/gameplan by the defense.

While I'm not blaming everything on Kelly (he can't go out there and make the tackles for the guys on D), I do not like that he gave up. After Rees's last interception late in the game, all the fans knew that the game was over. Apparently Kelly did, too. He never used a timeout. The D was trying to strip the ball, but it wouldn't have mattered. Without calling a timeout, even if they got lucky and put a helmet on the ball, there wouldn't have been enough time left for anything to happen. It really got to me to have the coach just throw in the towel. That should never happen. The fans can give up on a game...but the coaches and players never should.

I don't think you can pin any of this on the gameplan. Notre Dame's players shit themselves last night. There were numerous times when players were in position to make great plays and simply choked.

I was impressed at USC's gameplan in particular. I've said all year that I would throw on the edges against this defense. USC did it ad nauseum and has been the only team all year that ran through Notre Dame's partially-hobbled interior defense.

Shembo, Rees, Wood, and Fleming all played poorly in my opinion for being starters.

I'm ready for Hendrix, personally. Rees hasn't played well against any defense with speed, ever.

Notice the punting game has improved dramatically. It's nice to have a staff that can develop players for once.

This is the Year of the Unforced Turnover for Notre Dame. I can't imagine how frustrating this is for Kelly. I think it goes past the point of being Kelly Red, now it's the silent fury. haha
