Seems like it had to have been airborne in the early days to create the widespread breakout. But at least early variants of the virus must not have turned all the dead into zombies. It would follow, possibly, that future variants could eventually turn the living.

I hope we will learn tonight what CDC scientist told Rick. There's a couple of problems with it being simply airborne or that they were all infected. If Rick chose not to share then, for whatever reason, what has really changed now that he would share that? Also, Rick seemed legitimately stumped about the zombies they were finding with no bite marks or scratches. Maybe he was just playing dumb. I think whatever the CDC told Rick he must not have known what to make of it, and Shane was the confirming "second half" of that. Being told only that the virus was airborne and/or that they were infected would fit with all that.
