I always enjoy throwbacks too....and with tradition like ours, it would make it even better!

I think we'd wear red pants all the time if the red pants we do have weren't worn out.

I like that Coach Davault always has the team wear red pants for the Wooster game. Sort of a nod to tradition if you will.

The Ashland High School football team got a whole lot out of its bounce-back, defensive stand of a win last week when it trampled Mansfield Senior at home, 38-6.

But if the Arrows really want to shake up the enormously shaken Ohio Cardinal Conference -- they are one of five teams tied for first place at 2-1 -- the team needs to find a way to win Friday at Orrville's Red Rider Stadium.

The Red Riders (also 2-1) are the only OCC team getting into the playoffs as of now. Orrville would be the fifth seed in Region 13 and would play at Black River in the first round if it was today, but a lot of things have to happen before then, and Ashland is hoping one of those things is its first road win this season Friday.

If the Arrows could beat the Red Riders, who they've knocked off in four of the last five meetings, it certainly would leave the schedule in Ashland's favor down the stretch. AHS has home games with Clear Fork and Madison -- also both 2-1 in OCC play -- in Weeks 8 and 9, before traveling to Lexington.

Orrville, meanwhile, has its next two games on the road at Madison and Clear Fork before hosting Wooster in Week 10.

"We're fortunate right now to be back in the race after the loss (in Week 5 at West Holmes)," Arrows coach Scott Valentine said. "... But that's the thing with this league -- you're not sure how things are going to go. There's so many things that are unknown right now because of the way people are playing and where you thought people would be. For us, it's an important week and we've got to get out and take advantage of the opportunity we've been given."

Offensively, the Arrows look to have found a new go-to man in the backfield in sophomore Jake Allton, who ran it eight times for 70 yards and a touchdown against the Tygers. With a little more balance on offense, AHS has put up 37.2 ppg. since Week 2.

"Initially, we were looking at (Allton) as a sophomore playing some on defense for us," Valentine said. "But some of our other guys had been playing pretty well, so he wasn't getting as much (of a chance on that side)."

Allton could get even more touches with junior speedster Kozmo Krueger likely out the rest of the season due to a broken collarbone suffered in practice last week.

"He was having a good year for us," said Valentine of Krueger, who had 12 catches for 230 yards and three TDs. "You don't ever want that to happen, but it does."

Orrville knows plenty about the injury bug, too. Nearly every single one of the team's college-bound standouts has been hobbled this season.

Senior running back/linebacker Mason Monheim (many Division I offers, including Illinois) will be playing for the second straight week with a cast on his broken left hand; senior receiver/defensive back Drew Brenner (offer from Akron) played last week with a high-ankle sprain; and senior running back/linebacker Matt Davis (had an offer from Buffalo before an ACL injury in the preseason) returned last week after it was assumed he would miss the entire season.

Orrville senior Stewart Turner Jr. has verbally committed to play at Ball State, and right now leads the Red Riders with 28 catches for 526 yards and four TDs.

But the 6-foot-1, 217-pound Monheim has been the most punishing of that group. He ran 27 times for 159 yards and two touchdowns last week in Orrville's 28-21 win at West Holmes, and now has almost 700 yards and six scores total, along with a team-high 62 tackles on defense.

Monheim's big, one-handed week against the Knights helped the Red Riders rebound from a 21-14 loss at Mansfield a week earlier.

Orrville has gotten up-and-down performances from junior quarterback Kyle Lichti (1,164 yards passing, 11 TDs, 10 interceptions) and is only 1-2 in one-possession games so far. But the team has gotten key defense from seniors Trevor White (57 tackles, six sacks) and Dylan Lemon (seven sacks).

Ashland's Adam Wolbert also has spent plenty of time in the backfield this season (area-high seven sacks) alongside Willie Moore (68 tackles).
On offense, quarterback Zach Bernhard (1,590 yards, 14 TDs passing) continues to balance his options with go-to guys like Marquise Jones (46 catches, 701 yards, 7 TDs) and Brandon Nardo (12-262-3). Josh Duewel (17-186-1) also had a big week last week.

Congratulations Arrows on a well deserved victory, defense did an outstanding job, offense did what it needed to win the game.

All I have to say about Orrville is they need to get some discipline and start playing like a team instead of 11 individuals.

The officiating crew was terrible on both ways, need to get experienced people to run markers and time clock.

Good Luck to Orrville, I hope you right the ship before it sinks!
