Hey guys, I'm clueless when it comes to cars and I've got a bit of a problem. My front passenger window won't stay up. I have tape at the base of it right now because it rained and I didn't want my car to get soaked. If I hit a speed bump of any kind my window drops a few inches. I'm not sure if the motor is dead (it is automatic) or what. I've been told that it may be a regulator, but I'm not sure. I'm going to just go to a scrap yard and pick up a part if I can get a definitive answer. Does anyone know anything I can check for to be 100% sure what needs replaced?

sounds like its off the track...you basically need to take the door panel off and put it back on...its a crappy job

So how would you know whether or not it was something like a regulator?

What does it do when you try to put the window up or down? Does it work at all? If the motor is dead, it will just click and won't do anything. What's the make and model of your vehcile? If it's a Chevy, Dodge or VW, I would say that it is 100% your regultor. If not, then it may be something else.

It's a Ford. If I try to roll it up or down it doesn't do anything. I would believe the guy that said it was off track because it doesn't even seem to respond to me hitting to button. But because I don't know anything about cars I wanted to make sure it wasn't a regulator problem. Only thing is, I don't know what a regulator does. I'm not entirely sure the motor is dead, only because of the window just dropping on it's own. I feel like that's not a problem with the motor.

Does it whine when you try to put it up or down? can you hear it trying to move? If not, the motor is probably dead.

It doesn't whine. It almost acts as if there was no power to the window at all. And it takes a lot to pull it up. It doesn't just pull up as easy as you would think it would.

if it acts like there is no power, then it is probably the regulator. Just from my experience.

Sounds like a dead motor to me. Hopefully you can fix it yourself because auto shops charge an insane amount to fix. I know I was quoted at over $300 a window in my car. I learned how to do it myself.

Luickily I only ever had them go out in a Dodge truck, which is super easy to fix. There is literally direct access to the regulator. I've heard VW's on the other hand..... :thumbdown:

try to bang really hard on the inside of the door where the motor is...sometimes the threads can get stuck on the motor...but that wouldnt explain the window falling down only the part about the motor not working..if the window falls down by itself its off track

If I can't figure it out I've got one of those dads that refuses to pay people to do work you can do yourself. He'll work on stuff UNTIL he figures it out. Kinda handy having someone like that around, cause I'd just pay... then he'd give me a piece of his mind.

Well, according to my dad, Ford is a bunch of pricks. Apparently they don't like people doing work on their cars on their own so they make it super hard to be able to. We spent countless hours changing the starter in the very same car because they hid the access point to get the starter out of the car. It took many rachets and universal joints to get that mother f-ing thing out of there. Getting the new one back in was just as frustrating.

Simple to tale the door panel off and take a look see ... I think LJ is correct but I had a Bonnieville and it was off the track and the motor was stuck because of the window off the track. Once I put the window back on track and WD40 the motor .. it worked

If the motor is dead, you can put the window back on track and disconeect the motor. Solves the problem but you can't open the window. We did tha tin one of our sons's cars and it cost around $20 for a guy to do it.

Try Autoforum.com . I have had pretty good luck there.

Also, if you get it up and can keep it there to stop it from leaking, and it stays there, just leave it alone. Do you have A/C? If so, you don't need that window too much anyway once it's up.
