SOUTH BEND -- Notre Dame hockey almost seems to be exploding with excitement.

Notre Dame coach Jeff Jackson welcomes back 17 letter-winners from last year’s Frozen Four team including sophomore stars T.J. Tynan and Anders Lee, junior goalie Mike Johnson, plus CCHA defenseman of the year Sean Lorenz and mainstays Billy Maday and Riley Sheahan.

Five talented freshmen led by defenseman Robbie Russo are added to that bunch that went 25-14-5 last season.

And back calling the shots for The Sporting News’ No. 1 ranked team is Jackson, who has two national championships to his head coaching credit.

Where does Notre Dame plan to go conference wise after this season? Hopefully it is the NCHC so they can continue their rivalry with Miami.

ND #1, Miami #2, and Michigan #6 should make the CCHA interesting for the last hurrah.

Big Ten is going to have a full hockey conference next year correct? I saw some stuff about an announcement where ND would go for hockey, but didn't read where they were going.

WCHA and CCHA should be very good this year. Looking like HE is a bit down from the past, but as usual, BC and BU should be solid. Here's hoping that Guentzel's return spells an end to the crap of the last several years for the Gophers.

Go BU, Go Gophers

Big Ten starts in 2013-14. No word on where ND is headed yet, but Hockey East is looking like a possibility: http://www.collegehockeynews.com/news/2011/09/28_notre_dame_decision_not_the.php

ah cool. I don't really follow hockey that much but do follow a few ND guys on twitter who mention it. Not every team in the current Big Ten will have a hockey team, right? What schools will make up the hockey league?

Just six of them:

Minnesota
Wisconsin
Ohio State
Penn State
Michigan
Michigan State

I highly doubt the Big Ten would allow ND to join without becoming a full member in all sports though.

Can we make this the college hockey discussion thread? Figure there are probably enough fans on here to keep it going throughout the season.

Lots of exhibitions against Canadian teams last weekend ... teams of interest on here:

Ohio State winners 6-5 over Windsor
Notre Dame 4-0 over Western Ontario
Minnesota 3-0 over British Columbia
Miami 4-1 over Windsor
North Dakota 8-1 over Regina
Michigan lost 3-2 to Ontario IT
Boston U lost 6-4 to St. Francis Xavier

In the only non-exhibition action of the weekend, Lake Superior swept Alabama-Huntsville.

Would Omaha be considered a branch of Nebraska and be allowed in the conference as a affiliate member?

I highly doubt it. If that's the case, why not let in UMD and potentially Morehead (should they start a program) as well?

What Big Ten school is Morehead a branch campus of? Good point about UMD, let them in also.

Gah, fail. I meant Moorhead, but you're right, they're MN State, not U of M, affiliated. Still, the B1G isn't keen on adding teams of any schools that aren't full members - that includes satellites.

Gotcha, I was thinking of the school in northern WV.

The NCHC is likely to sign a TV deal with NBC’s Versus that will help the schools stay competitive in national recruiting, administrators hope.

This would be pretty sweet.

Hockey's back!

Minnesota opens with a two-game set against Sacred Heart. Notre Dame gets to travel to defending national champions UMD, while Ohio State takes on Quinnipiac and Miami plays Bemidji.

The Sioux took down the Air Force Academy last night 4-3 rallying from a 3-2 deficit in the 3rd period. With the win it sets up a Top 5 matchup between #3 UND and #5 Boston College.

Gophers took down Sacred Heart 9-0, Notre Dame dropped to Duluth 4-3. Now the question...will the Gopher hockey team or Gopher football team score more points this weekend? lol
