[h=1]Week 6 preview: Poland at Northwest[/h]TIME 7 p.m.

SITE Smilek Stadium

RECORDS Poland 3-2; Northwest 4-1

LAST WEEK Poland 10, Niles McKinley 7; Northwest 28, New Philadelphia 7

LAST MEETING Northwest won, 32-8, in the first round of the 2007 playoffs.

WHAT TO WATCH Northwest enters on a four-game winning streak and boasts the county’s leading scorer in do-it-all senior Ronnie Beers. His 18 touchdowns have come on the ground, through the air, and even on special teams while making 24 tackles, recovering a fumble, and blocking a kick. QB Nick Riley surpassed the 1,000-yard mark passing last week and has thrown nine TDs. WRs Dan May and Jackson Schultz each have caught a pair of TDs. Last week, LB Jay Strelecki had 12 tackles and returned an interception 39 yards for a TD. Poland has struggled against the run this year, allowing 231 yards per game in their two defeats. RB Jerry Lawman has scored nine TDs, including three against Marlington in Week 3. Colin Reardon is one of the top QBs in the Mahoning Valley. WRs Anthony Marchionda, Jason Morucci, and Jimmy Morocco have been reliable targets thus far.

[h=1]Scouting report: Poland (3-2) at Northwest (4-1)[/h]
The teams
The Northwest Indians started slowly but finished strong in defeating New Philadelphia, 28-7, last week for their fourth consecutive win. The Indians scored twice in the fourth quarter to put the game on ice, as head coach Vic Whiting saw his team execute much better on offense the final two quarters. Senior QB Nick Riley eclipsed the 1,000-yard passing mark for the season, but once again the key to the Indians’ offense was their balance. Ronnie Beers, Kyle Harris and Tyler Bowman found some running room, thanks to an offensive line anchored by tackles Jordan West and Paul Wellman. Defensively, Northwest’s front three of Matt McDonnell, Matt Schley and Bowman controlled the line of scrimmage, while linebackers Jay Strelecki and Bryan Pawlyk roamed and made plays.

The Poland Bulldogs are coming off a 10-7 win over Niles. Poland is much like Northwest in that the Bulldogs use multiple formations on offense to find a balance between the run and pass. The keys are RB Jerry Lawman and QB Colin Reardon. At 5-foot-8, 185 pounds, Lawman isn’t big, but he’s powerfully built and has a burst to get to the second level. Reardon, who is headed to Miami (Ohio), is an athletic signal-caller who can make plays with his arm and legs. Defensively, Lawman andReardon make their marks at linebacker and safety. The defensive line is anchored by seniors Jacob Janoso and George Dibo, who both tip the scales in excess of 250 pounds.

The key matchup The Northwest defense did a good job shutting down a physical, run-oriented offense last week at New Philadelphia. The Indians will be charged with the same task this week. If they can turn the Bulldogs into a one-dimensional team, it would go a long way toward running their winning streak to five games.

Streaks, stats and facts Beers rushed for 154 yards and two TDs on 23 attempts last week, giving him 517 yards and 13 scores in 2011. ... Riley was 13-of-27 for 155 yards and a TD vs. New Philly. He’s 77-of-136 for 1,003 yards and nine TDs this year. ... Bowman and Strelecki led the Indians’ defensive productivity chart last week. Strelecki had 10 tackles and returned an interception for a TD. ... Lawman showed his versatility by running for 104 yards on 23 carries and catching three passes for 74 yards last week. He has 570 yards this year.

[h=1]Northwest showing balance on offense[/h]
CANAL FULTON
The running game has returned for the Northwest Indians.

And with it, the Indians are looking for a return to the high school football playoffs after last year’s disappointing 4-6 finish.

After basically utilizing a five-receiver spread offense as its base, and only, offense the previous two seasons — and throwing the ball more than 40 times a game — the Indians are mixing it up more behind a deep group of skill position players and a maturing offensive line.

The results have been positive thus far, as the Indians have rebounded from a season-opening loss to Orrville to reel off four straight wins. Northwest will host Poland (3-2) this Friday in a matchup that will provide plenty of computer points to the winner.

“We’re very versatile this year,” senior QB Nick Riley said after practice earlier this week. “We’ve got two great running backs in Kyle (Harris) and Ronnie (Beers), we’ve got a bunch of great receivers, and we’ve got a great line up front that’s really worked hard in the offseason. We’re able to run the ball a lot better this season.

“It’s been hard the past couple of seasons to do that, but it’s (the running game) really come through for us this year. We can pass and run.”

While many coaches talk about mixing the run with the pass and achieving a balance on offense, the numbers so far show that head coach Vic Whiting’s crew is doing exactly that.

“We’re 50-50 running and throwing the ball right now, which is where I want to be,” Whiting said.

“We’ve got a Division I quarterback and great receivers, so we’d be foolish to not throw the ball quite a bit.”

“We’re spreading the ball around. When you’re really multiple on offense, the other team really doesn’t have enough time during the week to prepare for you. We like to do an awful lot on offense to make it difficult to prepare for us.”

Northwest rushed for 854 yards on 232 attempts last season, while passing 413 times for 2,569 yards. In 2009, when the Indians went 8-4, the numbers were very similar. Northwest finished with 3,420 yards passing on 413 attempts and rushed for 828 yards on 248 carries.

With Beers and Harris leading the way this year, the Indians have already racked up 804 rushing yards on 145 attempts. As for balance, Riley has attempted 141 passes, completing 77, for 1,003 yards.

Also, the per-carry average has risen from 3.7 last year to 5.5 this season. With 15 rushing touchdowns through five games, Northwest has already eclipsed last year’s total of 14.

Beers and Harris both played receiver last year when the Indians were an exclusive spread team. Their ability to play in the backfield or out wide expands the offensive possibilities.

“It definitely opens up our playbook,” said Beers, who has 517 yards and 13 TDs this season. “We have a few guys who are versatile like that, not only me. We can run a lot more plays and it mixes things up. Football is the element of surprise and it helps out with that.”

Beers and Harris are quick to credit an offensive line that features tackles Jordan West and Paul Wellman, guards Matt McDonnell and Cody Grogan and center Jerrad Cox. Tyler Bowman, at 240 pounds, helps clear the way at fullback, while Seth Duncan, Jay Strelecki and Jackson Shultz contribute at tight end.

“Our line, they work their butts off,” Harris said. “It’s great since I’ve grown up with all of them. We’re all juniors and they’ve been my line since the sixth grade. They’ve always worked well together.”

I know halftime activities have been relagated to the track. I am looking forward to this one. I remember Poland being a solid program, and I am looking forward to their computer points! Tying the boots on extra tight tonight so I dont leave one in the mud. Let's send Poland home with brown uniforms. Inside and out.

PS. As I was typing this the sun broke out here in Fairlawn. I am sure it is an illusion.

If Orrville firers on all cylinders this will be a great game to watch. Orrville is a yen-yang team. When it works they are explosive when it don't they are dudes. Good luck to both teams.

First off, congrats to Poland on a great win, you guys played great! We couldn't stop your offense all night. Good luck the rest of the season.

Second, and most important...Indians, you really made us proud tonight. You played your hearts out and gave it your all. Relax this weekend then get ready for St. Charles!

OT Thoughts: First, GREAT call to go for TWO...we couldn't stop the offense to save our lives, so there was no reason to give them the ball back...none at all. However, I am sorry, but that was a TERRIBLE call for the 2 point conversion! Really...run up the middle (with Riley spread...come on...that isn't a decoy)...just doesn't make sense to me. We struggled to run off tackle all night. Why try that when the game is on the line. Why not sweep Beers or Harris out to the corner and make him beat the D to the corner. Our kids are fast and I couldn't see them stopping that. If you don't think that would really work then try something tricky...it worked to get us to OT! I know, I know...if we would have got it we wouldn't question it...but all of us bleacher coaches were going over possible plays to use and nobody even gave it a thought to run up the middle. Just too risky on a tough Poland D.

Still think we should have ran the ball more in the second half to run the clock....oh well.

Time to beat St. Charles....then play a perfect game against Canfield to pray for a win...then win the last two and pray we squeak in.

Good Luck Indians! Work hard!

Quit living in La la land. Orrville manhandled you and that is a fact. We spitted you 14 off of silly plays on our part and still managed to win by 2 touchdowns. You definitely didnt beat yourself in Orrville. You might have though against Poland by the sounds of it. Have you ever heard of defense?

Stop trying to talk about football. Isn't there anything you need to bake, or something you need to clean?
