I know there have been discussions on here in the past, but just wondering if anyone has the Kindle 3g and is it worth it compared to the regular WiFi version? It appears to only be a $25 difference (with ads) compared to the regular kindle with ads. I have WiFi at home and other places, but I do travel sometimes, and plan on going to Europe within a year. It doesn't seem like much more in the long run. So does anyone use it and like it, or any other opinions on e-readers in general?

3g is only useful if you want to buy a book on the fly when you aren't home or near wifi. You can't just surf around on the internet, etc with the 3g its only good for downloading books from the kindle store. I have the wifi version, and I use it a lot to read books and review my school materials which are presented in pdf and I can email to my kindle.

Also interested to hear other's reports on the 3G. I'm getting one for my mom for Christmas and she doesn't have wifi. Hope it's easy to download books. She's not the most technological person in the world.

Yea, not having WIFI would def need 3G then. From what I've read, buying books is pretty simple, but browsing the web with the Kindle is not easy. I think I am going to end up buying the one for $114 that is just wifi and has ads on the home screen. I have a $10 off coupon at office max so I will probably buy it there. Hopefully it is worth the purchase.

Yea...she's getting the one with ads. I saw it on Amazon. I think the 3G with ads was like $130..without it was like $170.

The ads are totally harmless. One shows up at the bottom of your menu and another when you turn it off. I use a case so I never see it. Nothing ever while you read.

I don't think the 3G adds a ton, but considering it is only like $25 extra, you might as well go with it.

The 3G is invaluable if you are in a foreign country and wish to purchase a book - otherwise Amazon will tack on fees even if you have a wi-fi network. Also if download speed is your thing, the 3G is reliable and fast. IMO the extra $25 is well worth it.

I have the Kindle wi-fi, and it works for me. But I live in a city, work in the city, and don't travel much, so wi-fi signals aren't a big issue. If I'm ever out of reach of a wi-fi signal, I just turn my phone into a hotspot and download that way.
