and on the flipside of that, teams with elite QB's who are very durable dont like to spend alot of $$$ on the backup QB.
In the salary cap era a team has to look where they can skim costs, and the colts seem to think that the backup QB spot was the place to do that and for the most part they have been right

BR1986FB;883920 wrote:You may be right. I've heard various reports that he WILL need another surgery which will a) end his season and b) possibly end his career. Guess we wait and see.
As someone who has had to have neck surgery for problems likely not as severe as what Manning had, I can tell you that once they mess with your neck, it's never the same. Some of the problems may be related to genetics and simply not correctable, but it seems to me that neck surgeries almost always have after-effects that create problems. These include chronic pain, spasms, and lack of mobility that you had before.

I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see him coming back completely from this. He may play again, but I'm afraid it will be short-lived and he'll end up retiring because of (1) ongoing problems and/or (2) risk of permanent injury.

There are tweets going around that he did have surgery within the past few days and is out for the year. No clue on how reliable the info is

I was also told the 3rd procedure has taken place, either Sun or Monday.

What I said: A source I consider reliable told me he is out for the season. I do believe that the actual diagnosis is still being determined

That's, well, huge if true. I guess we'll find out soon enough how bad it is.

Would definitely like a more reliable link than the Indy radio host. Anyone have anything more concrete, or at least a second source corroborating the story?

As long as he misses the Browns game, I'll be happy. Other than that, hopefully he gets it straightened out.

He'd be so rusty that I'd more than "like" the Browns chances in that one.

As I said before. If JMV is reporting Peyton is going to be gone for awhile...believe it.

When he comes out with big news, he is right 99% of the time. This is over the course of 7 years of closely following him and his show(s). Some of the best sources in the business, and probably the best in the midwest. Not in tight with as many players like a lot of hosts and journalists are, but he is in very well with Nike, Adidas, Under Armour, GMs, Agents, Publicists, etc, etc. All the people that know what goes on, but are never in the spotlight. Those are his sources. I wrote the Colts season off as soon as he said he needed a second surgery and would miss significant time.

Said it earlier in the thread.........I think PM is the type who career falls fast! wonder how much the lockout hurt his rehab and such. I guess the last time he had something like this down the team Dr was instrumental in his quick recovery.

i do it for just this reason... I want my Fantasy League to be more about who knows football and who can evaluate talent, rather than someone who looks to hawk the waiver wire and pickup whatever the best matchup of the week is.

That's just dumb.

How is that not someone who is evaulating talent?

Pretty sure it would take more knowledge to understand matchups then to be lucky to not have injuries on your original roster.

From CBS: http://mike-freeman.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/6264363/31814099
After seeing Colts owner Jim Irsay's tweet that his star quarterback Peyton Manning may be "out for awhile" a source on the team explained to me the organization is preparing for Manning to miss a large swath of the season, if not all of it.

Now, to be clear: that doesn't mean Manning will miss the season but the Colts' coaches have been told to prepare the players for life without their star.

What's becoming clear is that the Colts know far more than they're saying publicly. This is not a shock considering the extreme anti-media, anti-information release mindset of Bill Polian, the team's general manager. My guess is the upper levels of the team know exactly what's going on and have decided to release information at a trickle. It seems only Irsay and his Twitter machine are willing to share information. I'm guessing Polian would like to snatch Irsay's computer out of his hands.

The source indicated that Manning has not had an additional surgery. The problem is that Manning's neck continues to heal slowly. The nerve regeneration is proceeding at a far slower pace than expected.

So the Colts are simply being cautious. They want to protect Manning's health.

But the Colts source emphasized caution in saying Manning would be gone for the year. It's been explained to the staff that Manning's neck could suddenly start healing normally and he could play.

For now, however, the Colts are preparing for the immediate future without Manning.

Wow. Just saw that he had cervical fusion surgery this morning. 2-3 month minimum for recovery....I'd say his year is most likely over before it begins.

Colts QB Peyton Manning had additional neck surgery this morning and will miss two to three months, with IR a possibility, according to multiple reports. Story
http://twitter.com/#!/mortreport
Official: Sources say Manning had surgery this am - cervical fusion with 2-3 month minimum recovery. No word on whether he will be put on IR.
Manning actually just got out of surgery. No plans for injured reserve as doctors monitor fusion result, per sources.

Its gonna all come down to how the colts adjust and play more like a normal team does. Can their offense function without PM? They will not able to do what they have been, but will have to be more traditional.

Looksl ike the Texans will get their first playoff appearance
