After more info has come out, it WAS illegal. Browns had 12 men on the field and, by rule, the other team has to allow the defense to get the men off the field. They didn't. The Bengals quick snapped it and caught the Browns off guard. Gradkowski said after the game "I was looking around the field hoping there were no flags." The Bengals got away with one here.

All this being said, if the Browns TCB on their missed chances it wouldn't have come down to a fluke play.

I think the Browns only get 5 wins this year. They didn't play well, but they didn't play terrible either and still lost to the Bengals(who are a 3-4 win team this year).

Actually, after more info has come out it was a legal play. The Browns had 12 men on the field because they had no idea what was going on.

Oh yeah I forgot about that rule. "12 men on the field on the defense but the penalty will be assused to the offense for not allowing the defense to get ready" I see that all the time

Yep, and the defensive coaches. Read a few articles that nobody on defense had any idea what was going on and they were waiting for the call. Ridiculous how unprepared they were.

FWIW last night the Broncos were caught completely out of position near the goal line, and John Fox called timeout. Shurmer could have easily done the same thing.

Agreed. A coach who has been around the league awhile V.S. a rookie head coach in his first game worrying about what should be his next offensive play call.

From the NFL.com Digest of Rules

" "With the exception of the last two minutes of either half, the offensive team, while in the process of substitution or simulated substitution, is prohibited from rushing quickly to the line and snapping the ball with the obvious attempt to cause a defensive foul; i.e., too many men on the field. "
They Bengals snapped the ball with 14 seconds left on the play clock, meaning the Browns had time to make substitutions. Legal play
