Two can play the quoting the game....

Who am I going to take the analysis of? A bunch of posters on an internet forum, or just about every analyst I have heard discuss this bill....

Hmmm, let me think.

The bill does NOTHING to force a playoff, read it. It just doesn't allow the BCS to call the NC game the NC game.

Again, they'd like a playoff to be a by-product of forcing a name change. Congress will never be able to say, "you must have a playoff".

Wow, you've got to be fucking kidding me.

Really guys? And there is this much discussion on this bullshit? You guys are idiots.

I hate the BCS as much as the next guy, but this is just stupid.

Obviously its a step towards undermining the BCS...with the ultimate intention of installing a playoff, hence the "unless its decided by a playoff". I guess I would conclude that it is a step towards forcing a playoff. Can you read?

I don't think a playoff would bring in the type of money that the BCS does. We just disagree on that. I do not think that should be the driving force behind the decision because I don't think that process aligns well with the stated mission of the NCAA and the precedent they set with handling of all other sports.

However, I also realize the risk of changing the system that extend beyond football and I also understand that money does have to be a consideration. It isn't and will never be as easy as just all of a sudden having dropping bowls and having a playoff.

There is a lot of truth to this and there are a lot of people/schools making a mint off the system. But not everything that would be jeopardized is the evil empire. College football can be what it is today because of the dollars it generates.
Money is a big part of the equation. I understand that, completely. (I know I have said that I feel a playoff would be as much or nearly as lucrative as the current system)....

However, my main problem with all of this is the fairness issue. The way the system currently sits is not fair at all. That is the main issue I have, and I hate that is often ignored by everybody. The only topic that really gets brought up is the money....:-/

Funny.

This is fucking retarded. Our Congress shouldn't be paying any attention to this, they can't change it anyways and they shouldn't be trying. Shoot me down for being the next guy in line to say "there are more important things going on". But guess what, there are more important things going on. Not sure how anyone can say "good" about them reading this bill when they signed a HUGE stimulus bill that hasn't stimulated anything and no one even read it. Because they're busy doing bullshit like this.

Please tell me they got the idea from some voter somewhere that called their Congressman--now that would be fucking hilarious wouldn't it?

Your statement that congress isn't trying to force a playoff is incorrect though, to say nothing about big business bureaucracy. Congress is doing what is within its power to undermine the BCS system. What will the BCS be able to market itself as if it can't say that their system is determining a champion? They will have to take the word "championship" right out of the name BCS and go by BS. And if you place enough rules and regulations on a big business that it no longer is able to place an effective product on the market (which arguably the BCS hasn't been doing for years) you will see it reflected in the companys revenue. Congress is doing what is within their bounds to force a playoff with this move.

Because they will move right back to the pre-BCS bowl system with the conference tie ins. The bill says nothing about what the BCS has to do after they change the name, it just says they have to change the name. I never said Congress isn't trying to do something, all I did was state the reality of it, and people are freaking out.

That stimulus thing is a good example. I'd rather them spend time trying to make something better (and that I'm interested in) than spend all their time finding new ways to give handouts that completely backfire. If they would just talk about college football all day, there'd be less chance of them further f###ing up the economy and I'd be just fine with that. They're going to get paid no matter what, the difference is whether or not the results are going to benefit me. On most other issues, they completely screw me.

LOL. That's a pretty backwards way of looking at it but I give you props for trying to bail them out of looking like a bunch of fucktards--which we already all knew they were.

Fuck our government--it's threads like this that make me realize they are what they are though.

Yep. If you read the bill it forces NOTHING except a name change. It's ridiculous to think anything else will come of this.

House subcommittee approves legislation.

We are going to have a playoff one day.
No we aren't. They will go back to the pre 1998 bowl system before we have a playoff (I hate this saying with a passion, but it really fits here) and you can take that to the bank.
I do not think they will. The only reason they went to the BCS is because of the crap they had before with no champion. We still have no champion.

We will get a playoff in D1 in our lifetimes.
I will bet you $100 it doesn't happen in the next 50 years.
LOL I will take that bet. IF I make it to 95 years old that will be great. With inflation going up that will that be like $10.00 today? :)

Didn't read this whole thread of "why are they looking at this" comments, but can't Congress say the BCS is a monopoly with its automatic bids and bring it down that way. That is what I had heard in previous years.

I'm not sure it could be considered a monopoly when schools choose to be a part of it. The schools aren't forced to stay in the NCAA Division 1 Bowl Division. They do it by choice.

I am not sure it is considered a true choice. The alternative is extremely bad financially if they select FCS.

It is like a choice of being a butler in a rich mansion where you may have some scraps left over by the nobility or being a total peasant and getting no scraps at all. Not really a choice there.

This is the ole boy network at its worst in operation. If you are not a part of the ole boys network you get scraps that are left over.

Non AQ teams have no chance of playing in the BCS championship game to me that is no choice at all.

This is exactly why anyone who is trying to protect the system should have encouraged TCU's participation in the title game this year. It'd have been tough to pick them over Alabama or Texas, but the way things shook out didn't help with the heat they're going to continue to get from Congress. Had TCU made it in, the discussion would be over because they'd say, "See, the little guy DOES have a chance".

They've got just as much opportunity. Not as easliy, but the same opportunity.

They don't get good pre-season rankings. They play in what are perceived to be shitty conferences. They need to beef up OOC schedules in order to overcome that, then win those games, for a sustained period to be considered worthy of note.

(Insert "nobody will play them comments here")

Honestly a lot rests on how Cincy does against Florida. If UF absolutely destroys UC, look for this talk to subside again. If UC wins, this bill will probably pass and be signed.
