Does it? College football is a multimillion dollar industry. Of course there are MORE important things to discuss, I don't disagree, but don't take away the importance of a multimillion dollar industry.thedynasty1998 wrote: Amazes me that there is nothing more important for Congress to discuss.

Especially one that is "tax-exempt" because it is "educational".lhslep134 wrote:Does it? College football is a multimillion dollar industry. Umm, nobody actually think Congress is going to change anything. This happens after every season and every season the BCS continues to survive. Are you the BCS Executive Director by chance?ytownfootball wrote:

Chances are that he isn't...but would it surprise you if the BCS executive director was employing thousands of minions to go on to college football forums and spread propaganda for the BCS system? At this point I'd almost welcome the old system. Hopefully once it gets back to the old system, and then they will realize quickly that the old system sucks, and then because the BCS had been abolished, the only real solution (you know the solution every other sport employs...) is a playoffenigmaax wrote:
This is exactly what it all comes down to. I'm sure they'd like it to be the catalyst for a system overhaul, but once they stop calling it a championship game, Congress is out of the picture and we go back to the same old system.

Seems like they already have. You have a bunch of people on here doggedly defending the BCS, for what reason? I don't know. I love the token talking points that it seems like each person is contractually obligated to say.trep14 wrote:

Piont is jordo, everyone knows the system is flawed. BCS (shrugs shoulders) changes their "title game" to something else and moves on without skipping a beat. Nothing will change until the same amount of money can be generated and those that are getting it now continue to get the same or more. Power and where it lies will not change anytime soon. Just a fact.jordo212000 wrote:Umm, nobody actually think Congress is going to change anything. This happens after every season and every season the BCS continues to survive. There's a difference between defending the BCS on its own merits and pointing out the reality of the situation. A playoff is a pipe dream. Not going to happen. None of the arguments in favor of a playoff are ever relevant to the job/roles/decisions that have to be made by the powers-that-be of the NCAA/BCS. It is about money and that is all. So all the talk about "a true champion" and some competitive balance is irrelevant. That is not an endorsement of the BCS, but a dose of reality.jordo212000 wrote: Seems like they already have. This whole Congress intervention immediately renews conversation about two things: 1) a playoff and 2) whether or not Congress should be involved in forcing a playoff.
1) A playoff isn't going to happen.
2) Congress isn't specifically trying to force a playoff.
Again, as ytown pointed out, this is about the practice of advertising a championship and making millions of dollars off of it (and not paying taxes on it), when it isn't really a championship. It is still about business and not about a playoff and one more time, that isn't an endorsement of the BCS but rather an explanation of the reality.

I just hate that the BCS indoctrinates people into thinking that this is the only system that will "make money." Simply not true at all. Do you really think that a playoff of any kind wouldn't make serious $$$?
The fact is the current system works for those who set it up and it favors them too and that is why the BCS is not going anywhere.

No we aren't. They will go back to the pre 1998 bowl system before we have a playoff (I hate this saying with a passion, but it really fits here) and you can take that to the bank.BCSbunk wrote: Breaking news. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4727426

The fact of the matter is though, the undercurrents of dissatisfaction with the BCS are there and only growing as the BCS continues to bungle matchups (this year being probably the worst year for it), a playoff will definitely happen one day.

The bill would ban the promotion of a postseason NCAA Division I football game as a national championship unless that title contest is the result of a playoff.

There is no way college football goes back to the pre 1998 bowl system. Absolutely no way. College football is way too nationalized at this point. The growth of ESPN and the internet has really changed college football from a regional game, where winning your conference was the most important thing, to a national game where competing on a national scene is more important. There is absolutely no way we go back to the old system now.LJ wrote:No we aren't. I do not think they will. The only reason they went to the BCS is because of the crap they had before with no champion. We still have no champion.LJ wrote:No we aren't. I don't think a playoff would bring in the type of money that the BCS does. We just disagree on that. I do not think that should be the driving force behind the decision because I don't think that process aligns well with the stated mission of the NCAA and the precedent they set with handling of all other sports.jordo212000 wrote: I just hate that the BCS indoctrinates people into thinking that this is the only system that will "make money." However, I also realize the risk of changing the system that extend beyond football and I also understand that money does have to be a consideration. It isn't and will never be as easy as just all of a sudden having dropping bowls and having a playoff.
There is a lot of truth to this and there are a lot of people/schools making a mint off the system. But not everything that would be jeopardized is the evil empire. College football can be what it is today because of the dollars it generates.jordo212000 wrote: The fact is the current system works for those who set it up and it favors them too and that is why the BCS is not going anywhere.

Two can play the quoting the game....The bill would ban the promotion of a postseason NCAA Division I football game as a national championship unless that title contest is the result of a playoff.
...aimed at forcing college football to switch to a playoff system to determine a national champion.
