Three Ohio State football players will be suspended from Saturday’s season-opener with Akron for receiving impermissible benefits at a charity events, a school spokesman confirmed for The Dispatch this afternoon.

The three are running back Jordan Hall, cornerback Travis Howard and defensive back Corey Brown. Hall and Howard were expected to make their first collegiate starts. Brown is a backup at safety.

I've said before, with all the scrutiny OSU has faced players will have no wiggle room when it comes even to the most minor of infractions. The same happens in other lines of business. If you work at a McDonald's and health inspector finds violations at your store, you better believe the next 30 days of so everyone will have to wash their hands 100x throughout the day. The first guy who forgets gets fired.

There are rumors out there that they received a gift bag from a breast cancer awareness charity event and it was just a bunch of random trinkets and shit. Since they are implying its "less than $300" i'm guessing that it means they will be back for the next game.

Okay, if this is true, then why the suspension? Presumably, anyone who attended the charity event would have gotten the same item, right? My understanding of NCAA rules is that they ding players for getting stuff not available to the average student. I'm guessing the average student could have gone to this event and received stuff, too.

Honestly, the NCAA rules on this are ridiculous.

Dude, I remember reading onetime that an NCAA athlete was getting married and had to make sure he was able to get wedding gifts.. They are ridiculous.

The spokesman said the benefits totaled less than $300 each. He refused to specify any other details about the case. But he added that Ohio State plans to make an immediate appeal to the NCAA for reinstatement after the opener.

OSU is just being extra careful. Under normal circumstances this is nothing but a minor violation. But with OSU under the watchful eye of the NCAA and a game against Akron why not go ahead and sit them.

Screw the NCAA I can't fault the players at all. How would they even imagine a gift basket at a breast cancer benefit would be against the rules. Investigation or not that is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard.

They still can not receive any gift worth over a certain amount of money. I believe that amount is(or was at one point) $100.

What were three college athletes doing at a breast cancer event tho? That's the weird thing in this equation. Were there some Hooters-like chicks providing free examinations to all of their breasts? There's something fishy here.
