Only because NYC was involved. I mean, they did get a foot and a half of rain near Pamlico Sound, so they are flooded to hell and back in NC and VA. The initial landfall lived up to it

What made this any different than hundreds of other storms? There was no levies to break and flood like Katrina. It wasn't even a Category 3 by the time it hit land. Just because NYC the media and government go nuts and tell millions of people to evacuate?

Category only has to do with wind. This storm had a large surface area, thus more rain than usual. High amounts are typical, but over a foot is extremely high. There aren't levees because the towns weren't built in a hole like New Orleans, and usually the rain from something like this is half as much.
Also, this storm had an absurdly low central pressure for its wind speed, so the storm surge potential was abnormally high for a storm with the surface winds that it had
They covered the initial landfall properly, but the 24/7 coverage could have stopped come Saturday evening as it weakened faster than expected because it hung over land instead of riding the shore over the water.

10 people, last I read, died, in those states, plus there was flooding and high wind.

Bottom-line: It was touted for days by the East Coast media as the "next deadly Katrina" only because the storm - this time - was coming directly at them. Katrina was a category FIVE...this was at teh very worst a category 2. No one with any knowledge of storms/hurricanes thought this was gonna be Katrina.

Said who? All I heard in my area were comparisons to hurricanes from 2007 and 2000, which were Cat 1 and 2s. Sure, that is NY for ya. But, that doesn't take away from the damage in the south. The overreaction to the quake was sad, and funny.
