So I'm out at my parent's house and my brother/his wife and their kids show up. So about twenty minutes later the two oldest kids (9 and 7) start fighting and my sister in law tells them to get against a tree for a time out. Now I'm not telling anyone how they should parent but why do people feel time outs are the way to go for punishing their kids? As for these kids it hasn't worked. What say you?

F'in "time outs"....WORST. IDEA. EVER. Light the bastards up with a belt or a willow switch. Or better yet, a taste of Lava soap.

I know the jury was deliberating this case yesterday, anyone know what the mom got for this? Too lazy to look.

Time outs worked really well for me. But I always made my daughter sit with her nose in the corner.

I say screw the timeouts, Warning the very first time and then good old fashioned grounding always worked. I am a little curious about the kids that had to stand at the tree for their timeout, were they still able to use their iPhones while in the timeout? Kids are a reflection of their parents and you have to teach the kids from a young age, what is acceptable behavior and what you will not tolerate. Just my opinion.

It depends on the situation. My daughter is 4 and I've spanked her, and she's received time outs. I agree parents should be more aggressive when times call for it, but they don't need to hit their kids every time they act up.

What kept her in corner?

Generally "timeouts" or the like only work if there is a true threat of a more, how should I say, "effective" form of discipline.

Agree. There is no single punishment that is right for every situation. I find that when I am at someone else's house, I am less likely to spank or get angry. It's usually a trip to the bathroom if it warrants.

agree with both...let the punishment fit the crime, and try and not to overreact--it sends your kid mixed messages, and could lessen the effect when the situation warrants a sterner (?) reaction.

I say the "timeout" was to stop the action and the punishment is forthcoming if warranted.

Wooden spoon at a young age sends the message when they get older.
Punishment is to be swift, direct and now . . . . wrong behavior get quick reaction

Is putting hot sauce on their tongue really any different than soap? At least hot sauce is edible

When I made my daughter stand on the wall, it was more effective than a spanking....she would get pissy and say "dad, why dont you just spank me and let me go" she HATED standing on the wall

So what you're saying is YOU had a timeout, as well?

They were talking about punishments on 92.5 this morning, and one caller mentioned that they had to stand with their nose on a light switch for 10 minutes. I may have to give that a try.

I guess you could say that. :)

10 minutes seems really long to me. Did they say how old they were? (I'm thinking if they were old enough to stand there for 10 minutes, they were too old to be put in time out, but that's just me.)
