A reader tipped me a while back that he has a friend in baseball who told him the Reds were talking to the Blue Jays about a trade Jose Bautista-for-Joey Votto trade. The Reds would have had to kick in a prospect as well.

I get tips like that from time to time. I usually dismiss them. But the fact that the Blue Jays sent a scout to Dayton to specifically watch Daniel Corcino, probably the Reds best pitching prospect, tells me they were talking trade with the Reds.
WE would have to add a prospect?? Aren't WE sending the MVP away???

.....yeah, for a guy that is having a better year and had ridiculous numbers last year.

Votto would not have won the AL MVP

I would have loved that. Bautista in the NL Central would mash. A right handed bat between Alonso and Bruce. Solid 3,4,5 for the next 5 yrs.

I dont think I would have liked it one bit.

Votto is the conerstone of this lineup and team. I think he has loyalty to Cincinnati and willl be here for a very, very long time. Bautista.....nah. He would be gone as soon as his deal is up.

Good idea they didnt pull the trigger on this deal.

I don't think it really matters, I guess left if Rolen is healthy (impossible?). This trade makes too much sense for Walt to do it. He's probably too worried about the immediate backlash from casual fans. Hopefully it happens at the winter meetings.

Disagree. Votto has never had the chance to test the market. While it seems he likes Cincinnati, he's a Toronto kid who grew up idolizing the Jays during their best days. To say he wouldn't have some interest in exploring any option to play there would be naive thinking. The risk here is the vital stats.

Joey Votto is 27, since arriving in the majors at age 23, he's been nothing but great. He has a career .955 OPS and has trended upwards in every category since his rookie year. He's an above average first-baseman who is under team control for at least another 2 years.

Jose Bautista is 30, never played full-time until last year and has career numbers elevated significantly by last year's performance. He was so undervalued before last year, he was released a few times and spent time with 4 MLB teams before the Jays, including multiple stints with the Pirates.

It's safe to say he's a late-bloomer who can clearly play, but there would be significantly more risk for the Reds, both on the fronts that Votto may opt to explore leaving soon anyway and in-terms of value and performance, Votto is more consistent and would have more overall value than Joey.

Interesting deal. I keep Votto though.

It's bad that this came out too. Might hurt Votto's feelings a little

I make the deal. It solidifies our LF position, and we still have a big bat at 1st. Let's be honest, Votto could go off the deep end at any time.

You're in for a rude awakening as soon as Votto's deal is up. No way he re-signs with Cincy after his current deal is done.

This would have been an amazing deal for the Reds. Votto is a nice player, but Bautista is an frickin animal.

Not to mention now that this has surfaced and is public, Joey will have a beef with the FO.

Even if it never came out. He's been through so much with the death of his dad, and he's so close to his brothers who are still in Toronto. The guy wants to be back home with his family. I don't fault him for that. And as long as he doesn't leave Cincy for St. Louis, Milwaukee, New York, or Boston, I won't be upset with him one bit.

That's probably why Alonso is still in Cincy to be completely honest

Dang everyone around would have been happy. Toronto hasnt been relevant for years only someone like Votto with family in the area would want to go there.

The Jays are going to be relevant, probably pretty soon. They have one of the best GM's in the game.
