From reading the Twitter page, it sounds like it could've gone anywhere from 17-7 Struthers, to a 7-7 tie, or even 0-7 in favor of Steubenville.

How did Struthers get their last TD? Throw us a bone here... how did the Cats look, for real?

It's hard not to make anything out of this... just a couple years ago, the Big Red could've hung up 35+ on the Cats, in a preview game. Tonight is definitely encouraging.

I know Steubenville doesn't like to tip their hand to anyone before the season starts, but is it really uncommon for Steubenville to lose Exhibition games like this? Would they rather keep everything G14 Classified and lose, or crack open the playbook a tad and send the crowd home happy?

Don't take my comment the wrong way either. What Steubenville does works for them. I'm just trying to figure out if maybe the Big Red didn't hold back a bit, because tonight didn't count for anything.

I would not worry about it.. Big Red Is Big Red... Get a few wins starting week one and red will Roll as usual... I can see a 8-2... The coach you have is at his best with less talent... He will get the best our of everyone of those kids..

I don't think Big Red could care less about the score of a scrimmage game and would not tip their hand even with the threat of 'losing'.

That said, I see this being another down year by SHS standards. I would consider last year to be a down year for them, just to clarify.

The wild card is at QB. Sounds like this kid has a shot at being an improvement over what they had last season, but even still he's not going to be a Macon nor Collaros. I don't see the Red making it out of the region and maybe not making it to the reg final. Still a good year but not a threat to win state.

If they are going to overachieve their way to the top it will be by pounding the ball and playing shutdown D, which they are notorious for. A lot less fun to watch then they were from 05-09

At the same time, a coach like Reno and a team like Big Red can't use the "it was only a scrimmage" excuse. It was the last tuneup and while Struthers is pretty good, Big Red should plow them every time. Big Red may actually be down (for them) this year.

I wouldn't expect either team to pull out the kitchen sink for a scrimmage, but they can still put forth an effort. Otherwise, what's the point in even having a scrimmage/preview game?

The scrimmage exists to get the team ready, not to entertain. If the coaches are satisfied with what they got from the scrimmage, that's all that matters.

You got me there.

Up until last night though, it was a "Preview Game," and now it's "just a scrimmage."

Tough sell.

Technically, it's a preview game, because the OHSAA says it is to be one.
A Jamboree is a third preseason football contest. It is intended to be conducted during the final three days of two-a –day practice sessions and serve as a “dress rehearsal” for the upcoming regular season game(s). In an ideal world, the game would be played in accordance with NFHS playing rules, i.e. four quarters, complete kicking game, regular clock rules and should involve all aspects of the football Friday Night experience.
But that's just semantics. It's the third freaking scrimmage. You're still working out some kinks, but by and large you know what you have from the first two, which is why the OHSAA forces a "Mock Game" format upon the jamboree, because it's the next logical progression. While the teams still may run conservatively, you're still going to see a lot in a third scrimmage run in regulation format.

Obviously the fans of the side who are underwhelmed with their team are going to make excuses, and the team that should have lost is going to probably have their heads held way too high for week 1, but such is life.

OHSAA only does it for the Jamboree. It was basically a compromise in order for coaches to get a third scrimmage a few years back. In order to have the "jamboree" (third scrimmage) you have to pay the OHSAA $250 and it is strongly preferred to run it as a mock game.

A buddy of mine said one of Steubenville's annual whipping boys Wheeling Park would actually give the Big Red a good game if they played this year.

A few years ago Park went undefeated except for their loss to us. We still blew them out.

I remember back in 1983 when Reno was preparing for his first season as head coach. In the final scrimmage, we lost 19-0 to Alliance. Everyone was ready to throw Reno under the bus. He calmly said, "We'll be ready next week." Big Red went undefeated and made the playoffs.
