Yeah, I'm thinking Janish could have got it.

Like you said Jordo, Edgar is old and slow and was pretty close.
Yeah Janish makes catches like that all the time

Honestly, I can handle this loss better than some of the others. The Reds got some timely hitting and excellent pitching from Cueto. If not for a lucky hit, this game likely goes he Reds way.

Do you think if Janish was at SS, that Heisey would have called him off that?

Reds pitching and defense can't hold the situations that the offenses achieved in the top of the 8th and top of the 9th. Tough, tough loss! That would have been true whether Heisey went for the catch or not. You have to try for the catch. Try to win the game, especially on the road, and don't play to keep from losing it! If the Rays just tie it in the 8th, then you are the situation a team pops one out, like they did, and it is a walk-off walk. Got to go for the catch every time - just bad luck it allowed a 2nd run in. Did anybody see how good a jump Heisey got on the ball?
As Herm Edwards says "you play to win the game... hello!?"

If anything Renteria is as good as or better is that play going directly away from the infield....he got an excellent jump (as did Heisey, but Stubbs really froze and was still not moving towards the ball when the camera jumped to the chase for the ball. Renteria was going for it and pulled up obviously when Heisey had a better shot....it's not the SS ball and Janish does exactly the same thing.

Old and slow Edgar stole a damn big bade on the same catcher that threw and got the ball there before Stubbs could get to 2nd.

Stubbs was safe on his attempt in the 9th. It was bad call.

mhs95....after several replays as the camera jumps to where the ball is going to land and you can see Heisey and Renteria already moving near full speed while Stubbs wad still frozen??? Heisey IMO was way too deep considering every pitch was outside and Damon was doing nothing but trying to stay alive...but still a very good jump.

I agree....but the ball beat him there more than it did against Renteria.

Damn, tough loss. Missed the last 3 innings, looks like quite the rollercoaster.

Cueto proved tonight he's no ace yet, bad luck or not you can't let their bottom of the order beat you after you get the lead there.

He's no fluke. He's faced Boston 3 times, Texas, Cincy, Toronto twice, Detroit.

He faced 6,7,8,9 and gave up 2 hits.

I disagree about Renteria. Janish is a much better defender and has a lot more range

Not saying Janish would have caught it, but I really disagree about Renteria getting better jumps

I know. I had a hunch Weeks, Hart, Braun and Fielder would get to him in some combination. They didnt. Bad prediction:(

In which did nothing but get guys on 1st and 2nd. All he needed was a ground ball. Which he got, it was just up the middle.

The bottom of the order didn't win this game for the Rays.

Cueto pitched his ass off.

If Dutsy leaves him in to face Damon, who knows what happens. I think he could have got him. I was iffy about bringing Bray in there and it bit him in the ass.

I'm not saying Renteria gets better jumps or has equal or better range. I am saying on that type of play Renteria still does that play as good as anything he can do....he did have a very good jump and is as fast ad Janish and clearly let up once Heisey was 2 steps from diving....I have to believe Heisey did his job and called him off so they don't kill each other. My problem is how deep he and Stubbs were with Damon very uncomfortable.

So you think it's acceptable when facing guys hitting .222, .223, .240, .181 to give up 2 hits and bring up the only guy that has rocked you all game? Right after you team finally comes through and gives you the lead.

He's a great pitcher, I'm just saying that's a spot a true ace comes in and gets the job done, it never should have got to Damon.

We'll just have to disagree on that one.

I promise I'm not trying to be an ass and I love to be critical of Dinglebaker.....but he was in the 8th inning and had already given up 2 hits to guys he got out all night and Damon was the only Ray Cueto didn't look good against.....and Damon looked awful against Bray....but battled basically not to K....but we were near the warning track.

But I wouldn't have had a problem with Cueto staying....I love for the starter to decide his fate, especially when they have been so good...but it felt like Bray time.

If Dusty wants him to be the guy, you have to leave him in there in those situations lol. The true Aces (of which I think Cueto is/should/could be) stay out and finish those innings. Even if it bits them. David PRice did just that actually. CC Does it all the time. Kershaw does it. etc, etc. You gotta let the Aces get out of their jams late in games, at least, imo.

That's kind of what I am getting at.

Bray has been great. But I want my pitcher to get out of what he got into. If he stays in and gets Damn, NO ONE talks about the 2 hits he gave up. But since Dusty took him out, it's a lot of what you're going to hear.

I also think you want your Ace to be pleased. If he is the reason they lose, its cool with him and he knows it and needs to improve etc etc. But he leaves the game with the lead and takes a loss (I know he didnt, but couldve), it isnt going to sit as well. Pitchers WANT to close out the innings they start, and I think its important to let them do that if they are a true #1.

Again, I would have liked to allow Cueto to battle Damon with the game on the line...but I can definitely see Dusty being leery after seeing Damon scorch 2 balls off of him...I really have very little problem either way....but I hate how deep LF and CF were on those swings Damon was giving....read the pitch and hitter!
