We will tell a DL if he is close. We will tell a WR if he is lined up incorrectly in an illegal formation.

So why do those penalties ever get called?

Guess what, how the WRs are lined up directly correlates to being in a legal or illegal formation. Why would the ref run and tell the QB (LOL) when he can just tell the WR and fix it most of the time?

There are other ways to line up illegally. Why fix it "most" of the time?

If it's an illegal formation, how do you know that "your" WR is the culprit?

Because they are judgement calls.

lol At Deangelo Hall.

Really? Not a facemask? You GRABBED Dez's mask. That is a facemask penalty you dumbass. Maybe if you focused more on your play and not trying to hurt Romo, you wouldn't have been TORCHED last night.

He is an official. He knows if the WR is wrong. He isnt speaking as a coach.

We try not to, but the problem is deception when the TE is covered up.

I think what he was saying is what if the WR to that side is lined up correctly? "Your" receiver would be the one on that line judges side.

It's either the WR or the TE, we are 8 yards from the WR and 22 yards from the TE. We don't care which is supposed to be on the line and who is off the line.

And if a tackle is lined up in the backfield?

He would be called a wingback, but not eligible to catch a forward pass by number.

How? What if there's another receiver (or receivers) on the other side also not on the line?

No, I'm saying of he is lined up far enough off the LOS where he isn't considered on the line. Illegal formation, why don't you warn him before ball is snapped?

I mean, the penalty is less than 7 on the LOS. Unless the offense is running with less than 5 OL, than the official is going to be able to say line-up on LOS or youre blocking the TE...

If the same thing happens on both sides, you end up with at least 7 each time, right?

Football games are usually played with officials on both sides of the line of scrimmage.

The umpire warns him to move up if possible.

I dont think that is illegal formation, unless his being absent means there arent 7 guys on the LOS (but an official cant know that. He can only know if the WR is covering the TE or not....). At some point the players have to do it themselves, but what is wrong with preventive officiating? It happens in EVERY sport. Basketball is the most prevalent, but it happens everywhere.

I am not positive about the NFL, but the NCAA foul is for more than four in the backfield.

Unless the offense is in kick formation, they must have 5 OL properly number on the line.

yeah, I think that is only NCAA that cant have more than 4 in backfield. Im pretty sure NFL can have 4, as long as the LOS still has 7.

Yes, with the possibility of creating ineligible receivers.

Yes, but only if a legal forward pass is throw across the neutral zone do you have illegal man downfield. If the ineligible player is the first to touch the pass, it is illegal touching.

The Texans released RB Steve Slaton today. Somewhat odd timing with their injuries at RB, but I imagine he'll catch on with someone soon.
