Gomes would have been a better option than Edgar. Edgar has LITERALLY NO power. Had he put one in play, it would have been a weak grounder.

Makes perfect sense to put in one of the coldest players on team when we need a hit against one of the best closers in the game

This. Renteria has no business on a big league roster right now.

Wood pitched well enough to win IMO.

I disagree. Renteria is the player you got for just such these key situations against a tough experienced pitcher. You are not going to hit a HR off of him to win the game. I agree with Dusty and his strategy. You then would have Hernandez up after that. Both of them go the other way well which is what is needed against Rivera. The fly in the ointment was the umpire who called the first two pitches strikes which showed as low on the first one and inside on the 2nd on both the MLB pitch tracker, and even more especially on the ESPN K-zone. The guys on ESPN even commented how Renteria and Hernandez were good matches against Rivera because they do well going the other way.

Past history means nothing in the present.

Hernandez has been good this year, Renteria has not.

4 runs given up in the first is not "well enough to win"! The guidelines of a quality start is constructed to show that you kept your team in it enough that you should compete for a win. A quality start was "out the window" in the first inning!

I don't care about a quality start. He shut them down after the first inning. Quality start is a made up stat. I saw a pitcher who, outside of 1 inning, pitched a hell of a game. If the offense was even remotely alive for the first 8 innings, the Reds win this game.

Yes Wood gave up 8(5 in the first inning) hits and 4 runs. He also had 6 Ks and only 1 BB. He allowed 3 hits in 6 innings after the 1st. That is good enough to win if the offense was there. This offense has been a TOTAL JOKE lately.

Hernandez is hitting .302. Renteria is hitting .219. Cairo is hitting .271. Now who is the better option to make contact? It's an easy answer. The Renteria pickup in the offseason is proving to be a BAD move.

I'll agree with your 2nd statement, but not the first.

Bruce, Rolen, Heisey, and Renteria all had opportunities, pretty much the same with the mission being to not make an out. Three of the four failed. In my mind the best other option Dusty had was to let Hanigan bat and hit Hernandez for Janish and Renteria for Fisher. Gomes would have been a bad option.

I said that a few weeks ago, but S&L talked down to me and said I didn't "get it"

Of the 30 MLB teams the median average for for runs scored in 2011 is 4.1 runs per game. I'd venture to say that if you give up 4 in the first, your odds are very, very long against you winning the game! Wood was able to hold them to 4 total for the 7 innings he admirably came back to pitch, which very much shortened the odds, but the odds are that another run would be given up in the last two innings(which there was). Reds are 3rd in the majors at 4.78 runs per game(which would still not beat 5).

Cairo was good last year. He hit .286. When Edgar does that this year, come back to me.

God damn that was frustrating. Nothing like leaving your best stick on the bench.

7 innings of sitting on my ass listening to Yankee fans.

You want your best stick in the game when it is prime to win it, and that was not the 7th spot in the order in that 9th inning.

That is his final batting average. Early in last season was when people were bellowing that he didn't belong on the team!
