Well, since he spelled a name wrong, they are all innocent and have nothing to worry about. My point was that he is right in his thinking, there is no way other people had no idea of the violations going on in the program and other coaches and administrators will have to leave.
I must have missed the part where he was slamming anybody. He did not make any false claims and did not use rumors for his story.
You guys will pick apart any story about the violations, until you can twist it to support your theory of, everyone that speaks bad of the program is just jealous of their success and must be telling lies.

I believe that you have proved my point. Anytime there is an article or report of OSU being wrong, you guys jump on the defensive to protect Tressel and OSU. I have and always will support OSU, but I will not support the corrupt atmosphere that is developing for any reason. how am I trying to be a prick, because I post a link from a small town newspaper that makes sense about the situation.

As for the spell check, I believe they do not use it, because 1/2 the people in town can't read and the other 1/2 that can read can't afford to purchase the paper, so why bother.

Student athletes are sold a chance at stardom, and are paid a college education ($25,000 a year?) for a full time job....hardly much more than minimum wage.. Meanwhile everybody makes millions off their exploitation....March Madness, BCS college football games, Video games with a players name and likeness.... are sold with everyone getting their cut as the money changes hands. Everyone except the players who get pinched for getting a little on the side....while the media makes it's cut digging out the sortid details of those "rule violations" and bringing down and smearing good men and administrators. Oh, how we love watching our gladiators fight it out on the field...just as long as our blinders are on.

Where is your sense of outrage here? Tressel lied and looked the other way when some kid sold some stuff. Penny ante shit in a sea of purulence.

Would a $10,000 annual payment for each player after the last game of the season, starting their Sophmore year be fair? I say after the last game, because if it was paid earlier some kids would just stick it out until they were paid, then quit the team.

I would also like to add, that since they are getting paid for their services, they can pay for their own education just like every other STUDENT, unless they are smart enough to receive some academic scholarship. That $10,000 dollars don't sound that great anymore compared to the money they are already receiving for their services, Right?

I've been pretty quiet on the subject for quite some time. Yes, I tend to believe Tressel will end up looking less culpable when things all pan out, even after the SI rag piece and countless subsequent baseless allegations, just a hunch that Doug Archie and Gene Smith knew more than they're willing to admit to and their knowledge would have set in motion the wheels for implementation of LOIC.

When you think about it, my thought process is more damning to the program if true, even further covering up what was known, so I don't think labeling me as an OSU, blinder wearing apologist is exactly forward thinking on your part.

LOL--touche'...and I want to reiterate that I don't like what's going on there as well, and that I called for Coach Tressel's resignation a few weeks ago. What I don't like is the piling on of redundant articles that are written by "journalists" who are just trying to capitalize on the moment--without anything new to report. I don't like the SI report, but you don't see me jumping to JT's defense on account of it--he wronged The OSU, and he is paying for it--dearly.

I think the actual method of compensation is best left for people who have all the information necesssary to determine how and at what level.

My point, as I read these threads and posts by people so eager to label and besmirch those involved as liars, cheaters, and corrupt individuals that should be fired, and disgraced, is that there is another very valid point of view that the system itself is flawed, and forces some to turn to this kind of behavior. It may be that it is discriminatory and exploitative. What is clear is that the typical college D1 athlete spends 40 hrs. a week on sport related activities....on top of his classroom work. That figure comes from a study done by the NCAA itself....which incidentally has a rule that a student athlete is not allowed to practice more than 20 hours a week. I posted the link on one of these threads..or you can google it if you don't believe me. So yeah....these kids 'work' for the university. They are compensated a full ride...great if you are a kid from a middle class family that is secure in their family home and can slip you some spending money every now and then. Not so great if you don't have the cash for plane fare to see your dying grandma one last time, or if your mama needs a new furnace. Meanwhile, BIG State University is selling look-a-like uniforms with your number on the back in every department store in the state and half the country, and negotiating a new contract with Nike to put their logo on their team's socks.

Without the opportunity to attend college offered by an athletic scholarship, in what kind of predicament would these poor souls be? Would a lot of them have gone to college at all? What would they be doing or making without college? Assuming they take full advantage of the scholarship and graduate, what is the relative value of that for the rest of their lives compared to what their quality of living would have otherwise been? What rules (laws?) would they be breaking or how would they be getting mom a new furnace if they had to get by in the unfair world of reality?

^^^Yeah....that's typical thinking from a white middle/upperclass male. Maybe the kid gets construction job, learns a trade and helps support his family. Maybe not the white middle class ideal. but it works and it is an economic necessity.

Maybe not you necessarily, but people get on here and slam Tressel, Smith, players for taking/trading for cash...a 'rules violation'...and rip on people who make excuses for them. Meanwhile they make excuses for an exploitative system where everyone is making money but the players...and we get our entertainment on Saturday afternoons. Oh, wait...then there's that TV revenue for games played on Thurs. nite, Friday nites, Monday nites. Yeah...these guys are just average students.

Your first line - please spare me. You are the one who paints the woeful picture. If you aren't talking about the worst cases (the guys too poor to live), then these guys aren't as desperate as you're trying to make it seem. So, those guys are welcome to get those construction jobs or learn a trade. Nothing wrong with that. But it isn't just a white middle class ideal that college is an opportunity to position one's self for better things. And if you want that opportunity, and you want to play ball while taking it, you have to play by the rules.

"Exploitative" is just so far over the top. The fact that the front line makes less money than the people running the show is the way business works everywhere.

Yawn. Those poor college athletes!! They never have to worry about leaving college with debt, they get a monthly stipend, they get tons of media exposure, and get any girl that they want.

If they don't like it or feel they are being exploited, go get a job like other college students do and quit playing sports. I would kill to be in their position.

Besides, how much is "enough"?

Have any athlete apologists actually studied how much revenue it would take to pay college athletes? How much profit do you guys think the NCAA actually makes? What about the specific colleges? Ohio State, Texas, and a few other schools turn a profit, but everybody else takes a loss. How can Ohio University or UL Monroe afford to pay every college athlete?

If they begin to start paying athletes, it will be the death of non-revenue collegiate athletics. You'll have football, volleyball, and basketball. That's it. Title IX all but ensures that the current system isn't going anywhere

You are correct with the news reporting the same story over and over, everyone just trying to make a buck. I just thought the article was decent because he is a OSU fan and he had written the story without slamming anyone or making excuses for the violations. The SI article was more hype than actual news when it was released, unless they are holding back while the investigations continue because the guy is a highly regarded investigative reporter and he can not be that stupid to mention names without more proof, knowing that people would lash back and maybe file lawsuits against him and SI for the story, makes me think that he is holding back and trying to set someone up for a major story in the future. Some of them reporters are very calculated in their every move and set a trap for their subject so they can bury them. OK I am done rambling for the moment and I don't want to get distracted and forget to hit the spell check button before I hit the post button. We can only hope this clears quickly so the OSU can get back to normal, whatever that may be nowadays.
